The @HighwaysEngland virtual public information event for the A27 Arundel Bypass 5BV1 route is now live.
During this event, you can view a project fly through video and more information on the development of the bypass.
The event can be found here: https://t.co/RGau4kIeNy
Here’s @HighwaysEngland’s announcement of the preferred route https://t.co/izZIGVj7TV — after further statutory consultation, examination by Planning Inspectorate and final decision by Transport Secretary, work is due to start 2023/24.
Of course some directly affected will oppose any road scheme, but we can’t allow every objection to stop essential infrastructure. Overall the bypass is hugely in the interests of local communities and the South Downs — and I believe has the support of the silent majority.
The Arundel bypass is a much-needed improvement which will hugely reduce traffic currently rat-running through the South Downs and its villages. Traffic will now go around the National Park rather than through it as at present.
With more housing coming traffic will only get worse. Motorists have been stuck in queues, and villages like Storrington have suffered heavy traffic and pollution, for too long. No more delays - it’s time to get on with the Arundel bypass. @one_arundel@A27Action#A27Action (4/4)
A proper ‘offline’ bypass is necessary, taking traffic away from Arundel and the South Downs National Park. A dual carriageway severing Arundel would be unacceptable to the local community, and far more traffic would go through the Park. @one_arundel@A27Action#A27Action (3/4)
We desperately need a bypass to unblock the bottleneck on the A27 at Arundel and relieve traffic which currently diverts through this historic town and the precious South Downs. @one_arundel@A27Action#A27Action (2/4)
Further consultation on the Arundel bypass by @HighwaysEngland opens today. The information, and details of the proposed routes, can be found here: https://t.co/hrsjnjI7AZ @one_arundel@A27Action#A27Action (1/4)
Revised timeline here. The original date for start of construction (Spring 2020) has been put back two years thanks to the judicial review - but the Bypass is still in the roads programme and I remain determined to ensure it’s delivered.
A further @HighwaysEngland consultation on routes for the much-needed A27 Arundel Bypass will take place between 30 August and 24 October https://t.co/uavxcPTOJL
Further non-statutory consultation for A27 Arundel bypass now late summer this year. Delay disappointing, caused partly by judicial reviews, plus ‘new information’. But funding still there, process continues. I’m confident this much needed, long overdue improvement will go ahead.
(4/4) We always knew that the bypass would face challenges along the way, but it commands strong and widespread local support, and I remain confident that this much-needed road improvement will go ahead.
(3/4) I note that Option 5a is still the preferred route, and that the £250 million of funding specifically allocated for the Arundel scheme remains in place.
(2/4) In fact, I suspect that further consultation will only strengthen the case for a proper bypass which relieves traffic in the historic town of Arundel and the South Downs.
(1/4) My response to @HighwaysEngland announcement of further consultation on Arundel bypass - https://t.co/uWqAMSK26Y - While I’d rather not see any delay, it’s no bad thing to give the local community every opportunity to respond when there's new information.
I hope & believe that judicial review of the Arundel bypass consultation will uphold the process & this much-needed road to relieve the historic town & the South Downs of traffic will go ahead asap - & so I believe do most local people @one_arundel https://t.co/6krqhtZTzd
Incredible that Storrington, at the foot of the South Downs, is in the top five worst places in the UK for air pollution. Time for action - including the Arundel bypass which will also reduce traffic through Storrington by 38%. My speech in the Commons: https://t.co/EeZIvDd4Wb
I’m appalled that @sdnpa is using public funds to try and frustrate the plannng process for the much-needed Arundel bypass which will relieve traffic currently forced up through the National Park and Downland villages https://t.co/FldzsFIlcW
Much-needed Arundel bypass now in sight after today’s announcement by @HighwaysEngland of preferred route. Work due to start 2020. Strong environmental case for offline bypass to relieve traffic through historic Arundel, South Downs National Park and villages.
Extraordinary that Storrington, a village of c.4,600 people at foot of South Downs in West Sussex, is in top 32 worst places in UK for air quality. A27 upgrades, including the Arundel bypass, to relieve traffic thru Downland villages can’t come soon enough https://t.co/jrlpRBSkBW
