This is 25 year old Thomas Martel. He kills kittens for fun. After his girlfriend found a Snapchat video of a living kitten captioned “Right before I murdered her,” police got involved.

They found out that Martel had been buying identical-looking 8 week old kittens online, naming each one “Shelly” to conceal the fact that he was killing them, and that he had been drowning, mutilating, decapitating, and microwaving them to death in his Chicago apartment. He’s been doing it since he was eight.

Here’s where it gets really scary. He was sentenced to four and a half years for animal torture and aggravated cruelty, but Illinois law counted the 1000-plus days he’d been on electronic monitoring as time served behind bars. He reported to prison and was released the same day, back to his family’s Northbrook home with just six months of supervised release between him and no supervision whatsoever. And that’s a huge problem.

See, torturing animals is one of the biggest behavioral predictors for violence against humans, especially sexual violence. He got off on what he did to those cats. He liked it — and he’s almost certain to act out again.

Studies have shown that the rate of animal abuse among serial killers and men who commit sexual homicides is shockingly high, and Martel’s behavior already reveals a cyclical pattern of violence, with build up and cooldown periods. This pattern is an enormous red flag, and increases the already high chances that Martel will reoffend in some way. Guys like that dream of bigger prey than kittens, and to add another layer of awfulness to Martel, he enjoyed taunting animal rights activists during his trial.

If you live in Northbrook, Illinois, be aware that this man is in your town. If he tries to approach you, get away from him. Don’t go anywhere with him, or believe anything he tells you, no matter what it is. You don’t want to be around him when he decides to move on from kittens.

Russia has found a new way to wage an information war against Europe, and it runs through Africa.

For a long time, African countries were viewed as one of the audiences for Russian propaganda. But today, there are increasing signs that Africa has become a territory where anti-Western and anti-European propaganda is being produced.

At the beginning of June, this issue was raised on the agenda of a meeting of the European Parliament's Special Committee on the European Democracy Shield (EUDS), dedicated to Russian disinformation and influence operations in Africa.

Moscow is systematically building a network of media outlets, bloggers, community organizations, "independent" journalists, and digital activists in certain African countries. Formally, they appear to be local. In reality, however, they often convey the same messages that the Kremlin promotes around the world: the West is in decline, the EU is hypocritical, France is a neocolonial power, Ukraine is merely a tool of the US, and Russia acts as the defender of sovereignty and a just world order.

What sets this model apart is that anti-Western content is no longer necessarily produced in Moscow or St. Petersburg. It is created by local voices - African journalists, influencers, and media projects. This is precisely what gives it additional legitimacy. When a Russian official talks about "Western colonialism," it sounds like propaganda. When a journalist from Bamako or Accra says the same thing, it sounds and is perceived differently.

At the heart of this campaign lies an anti-colonial narrative. Russia skillfully exploits the historical traumas of African societies, turning the memory of colonialism into a political weapon. Anti-French sentiments are gradually expanding into anti-European ones. Criticism of individual Western states is turning into distrust of the EU as a whole. Added to this are issues of migration, double standards, culture wars, and the war in Ukraine.

For the Kremlin, this is an extremely profitable investment. First, such infrastructure is cheaper than traditional state-run media. Second, it allows the origin of these campaigns to be concealed. Third, it creates the illusion that anti-Western sentiments arise naturally, rather than being the result of coordinated efforts.

During the aforementioned session in the European Parliament, Nigerian investigative journalist Philip Obaji Jr. explicitly warned MEPs about Russia's use of African media networks to extend its influence beyond the continent. In other words, propaganda can be funded in Moscow, produced in Bamako, disseminated through accounts in Accra or Lagos, and influence voters in Amsterdam, Paris, or Berlin.

Of course, there is no evidence yet of the existence of massive "African troll factories" that are interfering on a massive scale in European elections. But there is already sufficient evidence of another process: Russia is forming a local ecosystem in Africa for the production and legitimization of anti-Western narratives.

In fact, the issue at hand is a new architecture of Russian influence. It is no longer simply the export of propaganda from Russia, but the creation of a network of local intermediaries who make it sound like the voice of other societies. This is much more effective and much more dangerous.

Today I have met Lucy, Mark and Katie, Henry Nowak’s mother, father and stepmother. Their courage is extraordinary.

They have endured the most appalling loss, it is a life sentence for them.

They have also faced the agonising decision to release the harrowing body-worn camera footage, knowing how painful it would be and how strongly people would react. They did so because they want truth, accountability and change.

They have asked that we work across political parties and religions to rebuild trust in the police. That trust has been broken because of what happened, and I agree with them on that.

We must also be prepared to examine, carefully and seriously, religious practices or exemptions that permit the carrying of dangerous weapons in public, and other activities that are not conducive to the public good. We also need to examine where the law needs to change.

Henry’s family do not want anger to tear communities apart. They are a family who have friends across faith and race, and so did Henry. His family want his memory to help bring our society together.

Everyone knows I have strong views about how we should deal with equality under the law. What the family agreed with me on is that we need to bring common sense back, and that is what we should all be fighting for.

I promised the family that we will work to ensure there is a positive legacy for Henry out of this tragedy.

That is my focus now.

🇺🇸🇵🇰 A man from the US flew to Pakistan and paid $4,000 to free a family that had been enslaved for 140 years.

The family's bondage started in the 1880s when an ancestor took out a small loan. Under Pakistan's "peshgi" system, kiln owners issue advances to workers. Then manipulate accounts, add interest and arbitrary fines, and declare the debt a family obligation passed to children and grandchildren.

Kids as young as 4 or 5 work to help "repay" it. The math is designed to never reach zero.

Pakistan banned bonded labour in 1992. Estimates suggest hundreds of thousands remain trapped across the country's 20,000+ brick kilns.

Enforcement is nearly nonexistent. Kiln owners have political connections, police frequently collude, and families who try to leave face armed guards, false arrests, or violence against relatives left behind.
