Israel’s Red Sea miscalculation with respect to Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity is already being discussed among regional leaders. Core Geopolitical Threat: It legitimizes and entrenches alternative governance structures in the Horn of Africa, undermining the African Union principle of respecting colonial-era borders and inviting retaliatory actions. Somalia views Israel’s misadventure as existential threat. As a result, a new front of diplomatic warfare and potential proxy conflict, destabilizing the already fragile Somali state. Turkiye with its massive investments in Somalia may see this as an Israeli incursion into its sphere of influence, likely increasing its security and economic commitments to Somalia. Similarly, Egypt is sensitive to any Red Sea/Nile security shifts and may act in tandem with Turkiye and Somalia. Other actors may exploit Somali anger to gain a foothold, framing Israel's move as a colonial expansion, increasing the risk of asymmetric threats to Israeli shipping in the Red Sea. Other potential risks include other secessionist movements (e.g., in Ethiopia) may follow suit and may ignite a pandora box across ethnic regions in Ethiopia. This will surely lead to protracted, multi-layer conflict involving diplomatic isolation, proxy competition, and increased militant threats in a globally vital maritime corridor. Israel must be stopped before it is too late.
