Is there a direct link between #ClimateSecurity & violent extremism?
The answer is more complex than a simple 'yes' or 'no'.
In a new book chapter, @CedricdeConing & I argue climate acts as a risk multiplier, that extremist groups are dangerously adept at exploiting. 🧵👇
.@UNDP, in collaboration with @MoEWRSo, hosted a reflection workshop for 34 young professionals from the Master of Science (MSc) programme in Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM). After six months of placements in federal and state institutions, the interns shared their experiences, challenges, and future plans.
With support from @SwedeninSomalia and implemented jointly with @Somali_NU, the IWRM programme is helping build Somalia’s national expertise in sustainable water governance.

What is climate misinformation and disinformation - and how do we fight it ❓
Climate change is happening. Scientists agree on the facts.
But false information spreads fast.

Clarity and the purpose of developing the the Peer review accountability and oversight mechanism established at TCC summit: To ensure the effective coordination, oversight, and implementation of AUSSOM, the FGS, in close collaboration with TCC established a dedicated accountability and Oversight body that will ensure the implementation of AUSSOM mandate and the Somali Security Development plan
Pro-UAE factions attack Turkey’s oil ambitions in Somalia. Pro-Turkey factions slam the Emiratis for hosting Israeli radars in Puntland. All mouthpieces for external sponsors.
Illustrative of how Somalia has been reduced to a megaphone war between Ankara, Doha, and Abu Dhabi.
Somalia has always found itself caught between external predators and internal cannibals. The political culture & state structure facilitates negative outcomesc. Hard to see this changing now or in the near future
Don’t believe those feigning fake outrages. They will do the same

Why Al-Shabaab Will Not Capture Mogadishu: Five Key Reasons:
1. Unified Clan and Business Resistance:
Mogadishu's influential clans and powerful business elites have a vested interest in maintaining the city's stability. Any threat to the capital would be met with fierce resistance, as it would endanger both their security and economic survival.
2. Turkey’s Military Presence and Air Superiority:
Turkey has established a significant military footprint in Somalia, including a large training base in Mogadishu. In the event of a major assault, Turkey is likely to deploy advanced weaponry and airpower to prevent Al-Shabaab from gaining ground.
3. Regional Geopolitical Opposition:
Neighboring states and international actors see a stable Mogadishu as critical to the Horn of Africa. A collapse of the Somali capital would trigger regional instability, something powers like Ethiopia, Kenya, and the Gulf States will actively work to prevent.
4. African Union Contingency Force:
African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) have clear mandates to defend the federal government. A full-scale assault on Mogadishu would provoke a coordinated and forceful military response.
5. Vulnerability to Drones and Surveillance:
Al-Shabaab's tactical advantage relies on guerrilla warfare and concealment. If they mobilize openly to attack the capital, they will expose themselves to relentless drone strikes, airstrikes, and real-time surveillance, crippling their offensive capabilities.
@adancabdulle (losing candidate can’t become an equal to an elected authority and international community must not engage losing candidates as an equal in political negotiations and discussions).
Notwithstanding legitimate concerns on FGS governance program & culture, people & international partners must remember that elections have consequences.
If you don’t like how the country is governed, win elections. You can’t lose elections yet dictate governance agenda. #Somalia
Wise words from a wise elder. Dr Baadiyow commands both military knowledge as a former colonel, a scholar in both worlds of religion and secular politics. Always offers a sober analysis of the situation in Somalia.
To achieve equitable water sharing we need open data and open information so that every stakeholder can be informed. Water knows no borders. Water security is Food Security. @FAOSomalia@ihedelft
#UPDATE: A new report from ENACT Africa, an #EU-funded program focused on combating transnational organized crime across the continent, has revealed the severe impact of illegal fishing on #Somalia’s marine ecosystem. The report highlights how rampant illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing is depleting the nation’s yellowfin tuna stocks and exposing significant weaknesses in Somalia’s maritime governance.
Somalia, home to the longest coastline in continental Africa and some of the most productive fishing grounds in the Indian Ocean, continues to be exploited. Vessels from #China, #Iran, and #Pakistan are using destructive fishing practices like bottom trawling and fish-aggregating devices (FADs), leading to overfishing and the destruction of marine habitats. Experts blame weak maritime governance, widespread corruption, and poorly enforced fishing contracts for fueling this crisis. It is estimated that IUU fishing costs Somalia approximately US$300 million annually, severely impacting the country’s economy and food security.
However, the report notably omits the role of European companies in illegal fishing activities off Somalia's coast. Activists and local & international NGOs have criticized this oversight, citing evidence from local organizations that accuse Western companies of dumping industrial waste into Somali waters—a practice that has caused visible environmental damage in recent years.
Many Somalis believe their political leaders are neglecting these urgent environmental issues, instead focusing on power struggles and political positions while the country faces mounting ecological threats.

Somalia is actively engaging with the AU and potential TCCs for AUSSOM. The mandate of AUSSOM allows FGS to determine TCC participation. A decision will be announced soon, aligning with our national priorities. The spirit of the Ankara Declaration remains strong and alive.
Climate change aggravates existing conflicts and is causing new ones.
