The issue was using their "smartness" to commit crimes and cause pain on many people's lives.

Had they gone to school, studied and got jobs, they would be CEOs in big companies today.

They used their intelligence in a wrong way and today they are both in prison cells.

This is also an issues with these people who were smart at school and turned out to be criminals at some point of their lives. Mostly in fraud, CIT hijackings etc. They know how things work; until they get caught.
