Voting Labour does not make you morally superior. It just means that you support awful things like the outrageous puberty blockers trial which will see children as young as 10 put on irreversible, life-changing drugs which can cause infertility, amongst other physical problems.

For you to support that is shameful.

And many gay, lesbian and bisexual people agree with me.

I am having a drink this evening with a friend in a Chiswick pub. Two policemen have just come into the pub and asked me to step outside. I have stepped outside and they have threatened me because I tweeted about a councillor banning seating outside pubs in Chiswick. They admit on video (watch it!) that I did not break the law at all. They came to threaten me. To warn me off tweeting about councillors and the council. This is modern Britain. This is the police state. Please, please, please watch this video. It does involve me using very bad language, but this has got to be seen. Police coming out to threaten someone who hasn’t committed a crime. I’m fuming.

Here’s the problem. The liberal political class wants us to treat atrocities like Belfast as single, random, isolated incidents. “Yes, it’s horrific, but don’t overreact,” they say. “Let the police do their job. Justice will be delivered. Let’s remain united,” and so on.

But the public can see that such incidents *aren’t* random or isolated. They are, in fact, all the consequence of massive state failure in the area of asylum and immigration. All roads lead back there.

That’s why people are angry.. They are sick of the platitudes that get trotted out after each fresh incident. They don’t want to hear them anymore. They know that the decisions of establishment politicians have brought us to this current pass, and they don’t trust those same politicians to fix things, especially when some of them refuse to even recognise that the public’s anger is justified.

There has been a huge vibe shift in recent years. Imagine - God forbid - there were another 7/7. Does anyone think the public response would be anything like as restrained as it was then? We are in really dangerous territory.

The public don’t want flowers and candles and “Don’t let them divide us.” They want someone who says, “I recognise that the state has failed abjectly. We have allowed far too many people to settle in the country without knowing who they truly are. It has disrupted your communities. Your anger is justified. And I will do everything in my power to put things right.”

Any politician unwilling to articulate that message, fully and sincerely, is effectively sanctioning more years of growing social disharmony and discord. Things cannot heal until those in power recognise the extent of the problem and what it will take to fix it. And, on both counts, most of them don’t.

That’s why the next few years are going to be very, very turbulent.

LGB Alliance response to draft Conversion Practices Bill.

The old conversion therapy told gay people to change their sexuality. The new version tells them to change their bodies.

As the UK's only charity dedicated exclusively to the rights and interests of lesbian, gay and bisexual people, it falls to us to ask - what will this Bill mean for young people who are simply gay or bisexual?

We've read the legislation carefully. Our conclusion is that it risks making it harder for those young people to receive the time, conversations and exploratory support that have helped generations of same-sex attracted people understand and accept themselves. And, despite what the Government claims, it risks criminalising the very people society relies on to protect vulnerable young people - parents whose primary concern is keeping their children safe, whole and healthy, and therapists whose role is to help them explore difficult questions with care and compassion.

Parents, therapists, teachers, clinicians and support groups should be able to help young people explore difficult questions without fear of fines or imprisonment.

The abusive practices that concern us all are already prohibited by criminal law, safeguarding law, civil law and professional regulation. Where those protections have failed, the answer is to enforce them properly and to equip the parents, clinicians, therapists, teachers and safeguarding professionals - who are often the first to recognise when a young person needs help - to do their best. We do not need a new law that makes those same people afraid to do their job.

We support strong action against genuinely abusive practices. We do not support legislation that risks replacing one form of pressure on gay people with another.

We believe it's okay to be gay. We believe it's okay to talk. And we do not believe Parliament should pass a law that makes either of those things harder.

I am begging critics of the puberty blocker trial to stop getting lost in the weeds arguing about research ethics, Gillick competence, informed consent, fertility preservation and the like. The NHS’s refusal to complete the Data Linkage Study (DLS) before proceeding with a new trial is the ONLY argument worth making on this issue. Everything else is a distraction.
The DLS would find out what has happened to all the children who have already taken puberty blockers. There is NO justification for proceeding with a puberty blocker trial before the DLS is complete. The entire programme of future research in this area should be informed by its results. The fact that the NHS is getting ready to run a live experiment on vulnerable children before it has even established the fate of those it has already experimented on is utterly damning.
The deeply disappointing Dr Cass should be widely derided for her ridiculous comments on ‘harm reduction’. The DLS IS harm reduction. Critics of the trial must stop fighting on their opponents turf by quibbling over technical details. We need to relentlessly force the DLS onto the agenda and expose the shameful hypocrisy of the NHS. DO THE DLS.
