AZ's not-for-profit membership organization of criminal defense lawyers. Protecting the rights of the accused and improving the criminal justice system.
Thank you @GovernorHobbs for creating a DOC oversight commission. @AACJ_AZ worked with @FAMMFoundation & @mmgillwriter 3 years ago on a statutory DOC oversight commission bill. We applaud the Governor for acknowledging this huge need.

Lisa Bivens and @TimSparling1 testified against two bills that would have further criminalized persons experiencing homelessness. During that testimony, they both raised salient and powerful points which caused committee members pause about the unintended consequences of the bill
Thank you to all who were involved in this. Especially @realJaredKeenan, Kathy Brody and David Lane for litigating it. This is a HUGE and hard fought win for the defense community!!
On behalf of @AACJ_AZ, we filed a First Amendment challenge to AZ’s Victim-Contact Prohibition, which prohibited criminal defense attorneys from “initiat[ing] contact” with crime victims without going through a prosecutor.
Yesterday, a federal court agreed with us.
“This was vengeance, nothing but vengeance,” said @NavaLawAZ , one of two defense attorneys representing Rodriguez, in an interview with ABC15. “There’s no justice to be found here.” @Lawkop Amazing work fighting injustice!
“New testimony presented during September’s probable cause hearing and recently-obtained records by ABC15 show there was a high level of influence, pressure, and bias inside the Phoenix Police Department and Maricopa County Attorney’s Office.”

AACJ’s proactive legislation HB2673 was signed into law yesterday by the Governor. This new law will reform the AZ DUI felony sentencing code, provide prosecutors with more latitude to provide better plea deals, 1/3
protect individuals’ drivers licenses from being suspended from a single traffic violation and provides an expungement avenue for the driving records of folks who were arrested for a DUI—but never charged with one. 2/3
This is a direct example of the imbalance in the Arizona justice system, the unfair application of the law by those trusted to apply it and abuse of prosecutorial discretion. We cannot simply trust prosecutors to “do the right thing” as is often suggested in CJR talks. 4/4
AACJ President @NavaLawAZ speaking with @MelissaBlasius about the disturbing disparity in charging decisions out of the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office. 1/4. https://t.co/khbjFZT1jS
Brian Streeter was shot in the back by LEO, charged with a class 2 felony and is doing 8 years in prison for pointing a gun at himself during interactions with LEO. 3/4

AACJ Legislative Committee member Tim Sparling testified against a bill that would make it harder to spot and record police misconduct.

AACJ Legislative Co-Chair @therealNateWade talks with KJZZ about why defense attorneys see both pros and cons to the new preemptive strike rule and whether the legislature is the right place to go to dictate Court policies and proceedings.
Arizona lawmakers have been debating a bill that would reinstate peremptory challenges. Many defense attorneys would prefer the state stick with the Supreme Court’s decision to do away with them.
The Show speaks with @therealnatewade about this.

AACJ members provide expert testimony in the fight against prosecutors' attempts to expand felonization of substance use disorder
Critics say stiff penalties for fentanyl crimes would put users, not just dealers, in prosecutors' sights https://t.co/6ycNEC9EPr via @ArizonaMirror
AACJ legislative chair @theRealNateWade speaks in opposition to a bill that that falsely purports to go after fentanyl dealers but is actually so broad that anyone who shares any drug with a person who has an overdose within 24 hours is liable for murder.

I just obtained a copy of the resignation letter of MCAO’s comms director. It states concerns about using the office to repeatedly defend Adel’s personal sobriety struggles.
Sources say Liewer was walked out of the building.
As someone who was involved in this rules change process, I can say, unequivocally, that @marcoattorney was involved at the ground level since before the initial rules petition was even filed.
These are outright lies.
