1) Messalina's Affairs and Execution: The Empress Messalina, held a wedding banquet for herself and a man she was having an affair with while her husband Emperor Claudius was out of town.
When he heard about it, Claudius was enraged and rushed back to Rome. Messalina was blocked from entering the palace by his staff. After a day, the Emperor began to soften and invited her for a private meeting the following morning.
Before that could happen, a servant who despised Messalina, pretended to act on Claudius' instruction and ordered an officer of the Praetorian Guard to execute her. When the guards arrived at the villa she was hiding at with her mother, she was given the option of taking her own life. Unable to muster the courage to slit her own throat, she was run through with a sword by one of the guards.
Upon hearing the news, the Emperor did not react and simply asked for another chalice of wine.
