LASTMA HONOURS OFFICER OLATUNFE OLUWOLE JOHN WITH PRESTIGIOUS MAN OF THE YEAR AWARD FOR EXEMPLARY HUMANITY AND UNMATCHED PROFESSIONAL DEDICATION.

The Management and entire workforce of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) today assembled in an atmosphere of dignified pride and collective admiration to celebrate Mr. Olatunfe Oluwole John, a Senior Traffic Officer attached to Zone 20 (PWD, Lagos), who has been fittingly crowned “LASTMA Man of the Year 2025” in recognition of his conspicuous gallantry, profound compassion and rare devotion to duty.

Speaking during the celebratory ceremony, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, disclosed that the honour was conferred following the officer’s extraordinary exhibition of empathy, professionalism and lifesaving intervention while carrying out his statutory responsibilities along the BRT corridor by PWD on the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway.

According to the General Manager, Officer Olatunfe distinguished himself by courageously assuming the critical role of a first responder during a harrowing road traffic incident involving a commercial scooter rider and a female pedestrian, who reportedly went into severe convulsions immediately after the impact.

“His unwavering dedication to duty, humane disposition and prompt, effective service delivery have not gone unnoticed. His selfless intervention elicited widespread public commendation and attracted resounding accolades across various social media platforms,” Mr. Bakare-Oki stated.

Recounting the incident, it was recalled that upon witnessing the accident, Officer Olatunfe reacted with remarkable alacrity, administering immediate first aid to the distressed victim in a bid to stabilise her condition.

He further exemplified exceptional initiative by securing a tricycle to convey both the injured woman and the scooter rider to Mayfair Hospital, Agege, where he remained resolutely by her side. In a rare and deeply moving demonstration of compassion that transcended the call of official duty, the officer reportedly prayed fervently for the victim’s recovery while ensuring she received urgent medical attention.

Unaware that his altruistic actions were being documented, an onlooker recorded the episode and shared the footage on social media, where it gained considerable traction and ultimately drew the attention of the LASTMA General Manager.

Further underscoring his integrity and profound sense of responsibility, Officer Olatunfe was said to have utilised the victim’s mobile phone to contact her family members, ensuring that her father and siblings were promptly notified and present at the hospital before he responsibly returned to his duty post.

He equally ensured accountability by compelling the scooter rider to assume full responsibility for the incident, including the settlement of all medical expenses incurred during the victim’s treatment.

In acknowledgement of this extraordinary conduct, the Management of LASTMA not only issued a formal letter of commendation but also promoted Officer Olatunfe from his former role as a Choke Point Officer to the position of 2nd Bravo, Zone 20, in addition to the presentation of a cash reward.

Mr. Bakare-Oki emphasised that the recognition and promotion were deliberately instituted to reinforce the Authority’s core values and to motivate other officers to emulate such exemplary conduct.

“This honour is designed to send an unequivocal message across the Agency that excellence, integrity, compassion and outstanding service delivery will always be recognised and rewarded. Officer Olatunfe epitomises the very essence of LASTMA’s mandate to safeguard lives and ensure orderly road usage,” he concluded.

HON. SOLA GIWA REAFFIRMS GOVERNOR SANWO-OLU’S COMMITMENT TO ROAD SAFETY AND TRAFFIC DISCIPLINE AS HE FLAGS OFF THE 2025 LASTMA EMBER MONTH CAMPAIGN.

In a rousing call to civic responsibility and collective consciousness, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Honourable Sola Giwa, on today, led senior officials of the Lagos State Government, traffic management officers, and critical stakeholders to officially flag off the 2025 Ember Month Safety Campaign of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), held at the Agency’s Headquarters, Oshodi.

Themed “Safe Roads, Safe Lives — LASTMA Cares”, the campaign embodies the human-centered approach of the Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu Administration toward ensuring road safety, traffic orderliness, and public welfare before, during and after the high-risk Ember Months a period traditionally characterized by increased mobility, heightened commercial activities, and intensified vehicular pressure on the Lagos road network.

Hon. Giwa during his keynote described the event not merely as another annual ritual, but as “a solemn reaffirmation of our government’s steadfast resolve to safeguard the lives and livelihoods of Lagosians through disciplined traffic management, preventive education, and humane enforcement.”
Repositioning LASTMA as a Pillar of Economic Stability.

The Special Adviser extolled the crucial role played by LASTMA in sustaining the economic heartbeat of Lagos, noting that the Agency’s 4,100 personnel constitute “the silent engine that ensures the megacity’s continuity and productivity.”

According to him, empirical data affirms that each LASTMA officer helps prevent economic losses estimated at over ₦85 million annually through congestion management and gridlock prevention.
When multiplied across the Authority’s operational strength, this translates to a staggering ₦430 billion in saved man-hours, a contribution that underpins Lagos’ ₦41 trillion Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

He stated that “our LASTMA officers are not just enforcers of road discipline, they are economic stabilizers, public educators, and protectors of human dignity. Every hour they recover from gridlock is an hour returned to productivity; every accident they prevent is a life preserved.”

Hon. Giwa observed that this season brings an exponential rise in road usage, inter-state travel, and commercial mobility, particularly as Lagosians in the Diaspora return home for festivities.

He said, “Passenger inflow through our airports and inter-state corridors increases by nearly 30 percent during this period. Markets, event centers, and commercial corridors experience unusual vehicular surges that put immense pressure on our road infrastructure. It is, therefore, imperative for LASTMA to remain proactive, not reactive.”

The Special Adviser commended the leadership of the Agency for its consistency in adapting to the evolving mobility challenges of a dynamic city such as Lagos, stressing that traffic management during the Ember Months requires “discipline, compassion, and technological precision.”

Hon. Giwa disclosed that the 2025 Ember Month Campaign will hinge on five critical pillars:
Advocacy and Public Sensitization,
Empathetic Enforcement,
Enhanced Field Deployment and
Inter-Agency Collaboration.

He declared, “Safety is not seasonal it is cultural. Let us make the right driving attitude the new Lagos identity. Compliance is not punishment; it is partnership. Every Lagosian must internalize the message that safe roads guarantee safe lives because indeed, LASTMA cares.”

The Agency has upgraded its operational capacity through technology, drone surveillance, and logistics, and deployed over 2,500 officers, refurbished vehicles, and strengthened communication systems for the 2025 Ember season. The General Manager stressed that road safety is a shared responsibility, urging drivers, passengers, and pedestrians to act with discipline, patience, and empathy.

The forum aims to renew the pact for collective responsibility through collaboration, education, and enforcement, with a vision of Zero Accidents, Zero Fatalities, Zero Excuses.
