The Ghoti Bengalis of West Bengal who are still queuing up to vote for Mamata Banerjee today represent the single most intellectually bankrupt and self-deluded segment of Indian society.
These are the same people who have perfected the art of parasitic laziness while loudly proclaiming themselves the torchbearers of Bengal’s legendary intellect. They are, by and large, the most indolent, semi-literate, and counterfeit elites India has ever produced — a group that has spent decades living off borrowed glory, stolen narratives, and an unearned superiority complex that would embarrass even the most delusional narcissist.
Let us be brutally clear- the much-vaunted “Bengali Renaissance,” the literary firepower, the cultural depth, the entrepreneurial drive, and the raw intellectual hunger that once made Bengal the brain of India did not come from the native Ghotis of West Bengal. That credit belongs overwhelmingly to the East Bengali migrants — the Bangals — who fled the horrors of Partition and the subsequent genocide in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). These refugees arrived with nothing but their brains, their work ethic, and an unquenchable thirst for excellence. They built Calcutta’s institutions, dominated its universities, filled its newsrooms, powered its cinema, and injected real substance into what had become a stagnant, caste-ridden, fish-and-rice complacent society of the original West Bengali gentry.
The Ghotis, by contrast, contributed little more than inertia. They inherited the infrastructure, the colonial-era advantages, and the cultural prestige built by others, then proceeded to coast on it for generations. They turned laziness into a lifestyle, mediocrity into a badge of honour, and sycophancy into a political religion. Their greatest talent has always been claiming credit for the achievements of the very people they quietly resent — the hardworking, sharp-witted, no-nonsense Bangals who actually dragged West Bengal forward after 1947.
And today, in 2026, these same Ghotis — the laziest, the most fake-intellectual, the most historically parasitic — are once again lining up to hand Mamata Banerjee another term. They do so not out of ideology, but out of sheer intellectual cowardice and tribal entitlement. They have been conditioned to prefer a stagnant, violence-riddled, minority-appeasing ecosystem that protects their unearned privileges over any genuine development or accountability.
Those Ghotis mock the rest of India as “backward” while presiding over one of the most spectacular cases of civilizational decline in modern Indian history — a decline they themselves have enabled and cheered.
The real Bengal — the Bengal of substance, of merit, of fire in the belly — was never theirs to begin with. It was built by those who came from the east, carrying the true spirit of Bengali excellence on their backs while the native Ghotis sat on the sidelines, sipping tea and pretending they were the ones who lit the lamp.
History has already passed its verdict. The ballot boxes today will merely confirm what every honest observer already knows, the Ghoti vote for Mamata is not a political choice. It is a public confession of collective mediocrity.
Yes, Manikarnika needed cleaning. Yes, it needed renovation.
But can we not restore the Ghat without stripping off its soul?
The current designs look like a grotesque railway station in the Tier-3 city.
Am all in for redevelopment but at least make it aesthetic.
