Good luck.
I am deeply heartbroken by the tragic incidents of stampedes that have claimed many innocent lives across our beloved nation. These devastating events, which occurred in Okija, Anambra State; Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Maitama, Abuja; and Islamic High School, Basorun, Ibadan, have left families mourning and the entire country reeling from the pain of loss.
In Okija, what began as an effort to distribute Christmas palliatives ended in unimaginable tragedy, claiming 22 precious lives and injuring many others. On the same day in Abuja, a stampede during an annual food-sharing event resulted in the loss of 10 lives. Earlier in Ibadan, the lives of several children were tragically cut short during a holiday funfair, with some survivors still fighting for recovery at the University College Hospital (UCH).
These heartbreaking occurrences are a painful reminder of the fragility of life and the responsibility we all share in protecting it. As a government, we recognize that these are not just local tragedies but profound national losses. Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families, and we extend our deepest sympathies to all those affected.
We must act decisively to ensure such avoidable tragedies do not recur. Proper planning, effective coordination, and stringent safety measures must become the norm for public events and for the expressions of community that bind us together as a nation. Every Nigerian life is valuable, and no effort will be spared to uphold this truth.
I want to assure the grieving families that the federal government is committed to standing by them. Relevant agencies have been mobilized to provide immediate support and relief to those affected. To the injured still receiving treatment, your recovery is our priority, and we will ensure you receive the care you need.
As we grieve together, let us also resolve to build a nation where such tragedies are prevented through care, vigilance, and planning. May God grant us the wisdom to learn from this painful chapter and the strength to prioritize a safer and brighter path for our people.
May the souls of the departed rest in peace, and may their memories inspire us to do better. Ameen.
