Imagine you agree to buy something from someone.

Normally, you need a middleman to make sure both sides keep their promise.

But what if the agreement could be written in code and execute automatically when the conditions are met?

That's basically a smart contract

A smart contract is a program on a blockchain that automatically executes predefined instructions when its conditions are met.

They run on blockchains and power things like:

• Decentralized exchanges
• NFTs
• DAOs
• Blockchain games

Smart contracts showed that blockchains could be used not only to store value, but also to run programs and coordinate transactions without relying entirely on a central intermediary.
