Yesterday, I taught our #newcomers how to create a timeline to keep track of the main events in the story — our read aloud picture book was Show Way.
This morning, as I’m grading their work, I can’t help but smile at their amazing work. I’m confident it’s a skill they now OWN!
Today I gave our newcomers a quiz on these sentences we created 🤪
Kelly (in the video) did very well — oh, did I mention she’s a newcomer who arrived 2 months ago?!?
Also, love her translanguage use in sentence #4 🤩🔥🙌🏽
As Specialists who serve Multilingual learners and content teachers too, we wear many hats. One is coaching our colleagues (sometimes formally and other times casually).
Effective ML Coaching includes:
1. being a role model of what our multilingual learners need academically but also socially and emotionally
2. listening carefully to our colleagues and their concerns as they navigate new ways of teaching
3. teaching our colleagues about multilingual learners, their needs, and rights through classroom demonstrations, mini-pds, daily interactions, and more.
4. and helping our colleagues to pull away from old ideas and learn new philosophies without feeling guilty.

I refuse to believe that “writing domain” is “the last to develop” for MLs 🤔
With a comfortable environment, scaffoldings, comprehensive input, compelling text, interaction with the text, discussions, intentional support, groups, repetition, & teacher feedback…they CAN write!
