When a 1st grader has 10,000 words in their heritage lang & 1,000 words in an additional lang (English), we label them as behind their monolingual peer w/ 10,000 words in only 1 lang, “the chosen one.” That’s not a child’s deficit. That’s a deficit of our system/way of thinking.
