UPDATES: Former U.S. Diplomats Push for Somaliland Recognition
Three former top U.S. diplomats — Jendayi Frazer, Tibor Nagy, and Herman Cohen, all of whom previously served as Assistant Secretaries of State for African Affairs — are calling on Washington to officially recognize Somaliland as an independent nation.
They argue Somaliland has proven itself peaceful, democratic, and stable for over 30 years, despite still being treated as part of Somalia by the international community.
Their backing provides Somaliland with a stronger voice in Washington, where debates continue over recognition. Many Somalilanders see this as a potential breakthrough that could unlock trade, investment, and stronger global partnerships.

As the proud sponsor of The Republic of Somaliland Independence Act in the House, I’m happy to see @SenTedCruz carrying the ball on the Senate side for these great people.
A privilege to meet with Senator @SenTedCruz today. Somaliland’s story—of democracy, security, and economic growth—resonates strongly with U.S values. [1/2]
Leave it to the Senator from the great State of Texas to call for US to formally recognize Somaliland. As we all know Somaliland is already a fully functioning effectively governed nation - only lacking diplomatic recognition. Time to end the hypocrisy!

Somaliland has now existed as an independent country for 34 years-longer than the 30 years it was part of Somalia. In 1960, Somaliland united with Somalia forming Somali republic with a dream of forming "Greater Somalia". This union collapsed in 1991 after a brutal war.
