Ethiopia Seeks UAE Port Partnership to Address Landlocked Challenges: Advisor to PM

🇪🇹🇦🇪 Ethiopia must work closely with the UAE to overcome the critical challenges of its landlocked position through joint infrastructure investment, Getachew Reda, advisor to the Ethiopian PM, said at the UAE-Africa Dialogue in Addis Ababa, as reported by a Sputnik Africa correspondent.

🟠 The two-day forum aims to strengthen UAE-Africa cooperation and explore new partnerships.

🟠 The UAE is already collaborating with Ethiopia on port development in Berbera, as well as corridor and railway infrastructure.

🟠 An MoU was also signed between Ethiopia's Institute of Foreign Affairs and the UAE's Anwar Gargash Diplomatic Academy to further build trust-based relations.

Ethiopia is seeking deeper cooperation with the United Arab Emirates 🇦🇪 and Somaliland to ease the strategic constraints of being landlocked, with officials pointing to UAE-backed Berbera port and corridor investments as central to Addis Ababa’s regional economic ambitions.

Speaking at the UAE-Africa Dialogue in Addis Ababa, Getachew Reda, an adviser to Ethiopia’s prime minister, said Ethiopia must work closely with the Emirates to address its lack of direct sea access through joint infrastructure development.

The UAE has already emerged as a major investor in the Horn of Africa, including in the expansion of Somaliland’s Berbera port, a project seen as critical to Ethiopia’s trade routes, as well as in planned corridor and railway links connecting Somaliland and Ethiopia.

The two-day forum, aimed at strengthening UAE-Africa partnerships, also included the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Ethiopia’s Institute of Foreign Affairs and the UAE’s Anwar Gargash Diplomatic Academy, part of a broader effort to deepen diplomatic and economic ties between Abu Dhabi and Addis Ababa.

Iran Suspends Entire 60-Day Negotiation Process With the U.S.

Iran has halted its entire 60-day negotiation framework with the United States after accusing Washington of violating the very first clause of the recently signed MOU.

According to Fars and Al-Mayadeen, Iranian officials argue Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon less than 24 hours after the agreement was electronically signed constituted a direct breach of U.S. obligations under the deal.

Iran’s delegation was reportedly preparing to depart for Switzerland for the first round of talks when Tehran abruptly canceled the trip. Iranian officials now say they will not fulfill their own commitments until they are fully assured Israeli attacks on Lebanon have stopped and the U.S. has adhered to the agreement’s first-clause requirements.

The first round of U.S.-Iran talks is now effectively off the table.
