What you're witnessing is the great migration of majorly wildebeest and some other herbivores.
They normally give birth in Southern Serengeti because of the abundant vegetation around December to March.

Gradually, vegetation becomes sparse in the the south, so they move to the north.

Between June and July, they start massively migrating towards the north and that is when this spectacular scene happens. They will cross dangerous rivers like river Grumeti and later, the famous river Mara of Masai Mara. Crossing Mara River normally happens around July to September.

By October-November, dry season sets in and the grasses in the north become depleted. So, they move back to the Southern Serengeti where they would give birth and the cycle starts over again.

Crocodiles kill many of them during this great migration as they cross these rivers. Predators like lions, leopards and hyenas also follow them to look for any one that will slack.

However, hundreds, if not thousands of them die due to exhaustion when they make this journey with no scavenger capable of eating them all. This is where the earth's cleanup crew, VULTURES, come in. They're the ones that come to humanity's rescue. Without them, the whole Serengeti would just be a stinky, smelly land of dead and decaying wildebeest.
