Two days ago, an incident involving a woman stealing bread from a tandoor in Peshawar’s Qissa Khwani Bazaar became the center of attention. The tandoor owner assaulted the woman and handed her over to the police. Yesterday, Peshawar police presented her before the court on theft charges.
The judge asked the woman to explain the entire incident. Through tears, she said: “My name is Gul Bano. I lost my husband in an accident. I have three orphaned children who have not eaten for two days. There is no one left to provide for us. Out of desperation, I took bread from the tandoor.” Clear signs of violence were visible on Gul Bano’s body.
The judge first ordered the arrest of the tandoor owner for assaulting the poor widow. He sentenced the owner to two years in prison and ordered him to pay 500,000 rupees in compensation. Orders were also issued to the City Station Officer, and the Deputy Commissioner of Peshawar was instructed to ensure financial support for the widow and her children from the state treasury.
