My brother (a physician) chose not to accept insurance for awhile in order to give himself complete autonomy over his diagnoses and treatment recommendations. Alas, over the years, it became untenable to maintain his solo practice without accepting insurance. When he started accepting insurance again, I asked him if he was able to negotiate better terms with insurance to maintain some of his autonomy. He said, he tried, but insurance refused to bend one iota.
That is an unfortunate reality.
