I watched Ryan Coogler’s American Black Film Festival Honors acceptance speech and it brought tears to my eyes. 13 years ago he won $40k at ABFF that allowed him to not only get an apartment, providing the stability a young artist needs to keep creating, but also to make his breakout Fruitvale Station. To now being honored for the most ever Oscar nominated film in history Sinners. He is the quintessential proof of concept. A true testament to why ABFF matters & exists. Beautiful.
30 years of culture, creativity, and community.
