congratulations Bangladesh. politics is never perfect, & big questions remain. but to see what seems like a solid turnout in today’s peaceful elections, it is more than clear what kind of political contract the people of Bangladesh want. a significant moment.
I believe @MaktoobMedia might be the only Indian media outlet that has published stories by nearly 1,000 journalists in such a short time (correct me if I’m wrong). When we started this organisation, our idea was simple, a collective of journalists from all across India. A few years ago, we even shared details about our authors - who they are and where they come from. Most of our contributors come from India’s marginalised communities - Muslims, Christians, Dalits, Adivasis, Bahujans, women, refugees, disabled people, and prisoners.
Even though Maktoob operates on a shoestring budget and without any corporate or political backing, we have tried to pay our authors, even if only a small token. I know many of our contributors face extremely difficult circumstances, and as an editor, my biggest regret is when we can’t pay them on time. We always try our best, but sometimes we fail.
Our contributors have done incredible work. They’ve broken major stories, exposed powerful regimes, gone to places no one else dared to go, asked the hard questions, and challenged popular narratives and jingoistic nationalism. They are not just contributors to a media organisation - they are people helping to build a just society. It is our duty to stand by them as they do this frontline work.
If you read Maktoob, if you care about human rights and justice, if you value honest, courageous reporting, please subscribe to Maktoob. If you subscribe now, we can clear all our pending payments to our contributors. We need 250 one-year basic subscriptions to make that happen.

Editor, Maktoob
We have learned that @MaktoobMedia’s X account has been withheld in India in response to a legal demand. We have no knowledge of the reason for the government’s arbitrary action. It is an assault on press freedom. Maktoob pledges to continue its crucial work at a time when truth is becoming a casualty.
At this hour of crisis, we ask our allies to share links from our website to help people access our reporting. We are many, many more than them.

In Kashmir, every closed bookstore is a library burned. The transition from selling Ghazals to groceries is not just a market shift but a metaphor for a society prioritising survival over expression. Yet, as long as a single shelf remains, hope lingers.

By murdering teachers, professors, and academics, and demolishing schools, universities, and cultural landmarks, Israel has effectively stripped Gaza's students of their education, erasing both their past and future as part of a broader genocidal strategy.
Loyalty to the people is a precious commodity, never go against your people for personal benefits and success-especially at times when the people are most disenfranchised and most powerless.

Authoritarian governments sustain sleeping cells within the ranks of the opposition. These cells spy, influence policies, manipulates defections & even hijack parties to the advantage of the governments. Floating politicians often remain associated with these cells.
