💐🏔️On the first of March, as tradition dictates, the Kurds venture into nature, into the embrace of the mountains, where they find home in welcoming the new year, Nowroz. Here, beneath the open sky, in the scent of spring’s first blossoms, an ancient heritage awakens.

Hand in hand, men and women usually gather, in Kurdistan in Iran, in Kurdish dance, their steps beating rhythms that echo through the valleys - a celebration of life, of hope, of light triumphing over darkness.

But this year, Nowroz is different.

Traditional Kurdish clothing has been banned by the Islamic regime - especially in its beige nuances, carrying the weight of history. The music that once filled the air has been silenced. Women, whether adorned in Kurdish dress or not, are, as always, forbidden from simply being.

And yet, if you look closely, you will see the Kurds defying the regime’s decrees. For some laws are meant to be broken when they stand in the way of a people’s soul.

For a people who refuse to kneel can never be broken. A people who stand will always endure.
