Tune into @eNCA at 1pm today with @HeidiGiokos
We take a closer look at Gauteng’s crime hotspots, the latest crime trends, and what the numbers reveal about the ongoing challenges facing communities across the province.
Gauteng continues to carry the unwanted label of South Africa’s crime capital, with figures again painting a deeply worrying picture.
While the province remains the country’s economic hub, it is also battling persistently high levels of violent crime, organised criminal activity, robberies, kidnappings, extortion, illegal firearms, drug trafficking and corruption.
Today at 1pm, I will be speaking to @HeidiGiokos on @eNCA DSTV 403 to unpack the latest crime statistics, emerging crime trends and the growing concerns around law enforcement capacity in Gauteng.
President Cyril Ramaphosa will address the nation at 18h00 on evening from the Union Buildings in Pretoria on government’s approach to illegal migration and the recent rise in protests against foreign nationals.
The address comes amid growing tensions and demonstrations in several communities over the presence of undocumented foreign nationals in South Africa.

A Free State police officer and three other people have died following a shooting incident in Hennenman in the early hours of this
morning.
The 47-year-old officer, who was stationed in Hennenman as a Rural Safety Coordinator, went searching for his girlfriend after reporting for duty on Saturday afternoon.
After failing to find her at one location, he went with the girlfriend’s uncle to another venue where family members were attending an event.
Police say an argument broke out after he was informed that the woman was not there.
The officer allegedly opened fire, killing the girlfriend’s mother, her uncle and the 25-year-old woman. Two other people were wounded, with one taken to hospital and another treated at the scene for a graze wound.
The officer then returned to his vehicle and shot himself.
Free State Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thabang Lesia condemned the incident, describing it as “deeply disturbing and senseless”, and extended condolences to the affected families. The motive for the shooting remains unknown and is under investigation.
Cases of murder, attempted murder and an inquest will be investigated by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).

Eight suspects were arrested in the Phokeng policing area in the North West after police discovered suspected stolen cellphone tower batteries worth approximately R500 000 concealed inside a Toyota Quantum.
The arrests followed an intelligence-driven multidisciplinary operation conducted on Thursday night, 4 June 2026, after information linked the group to the theft of cellphone tower batteries across the province, including in the Zeerust area.
Members attached to Counter Narcotics Intelligence and Domestic Drug Trafficking at Head Office, together with the Phokeng K9 Unit and other law enforcement agencies, intercepted the vehicle near Boshoek while it was travelling towards Chaneng.
A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of four cellphone tower batteries believed to have been stolen from telecommunications infrastructure.
The eight suspects, aged between 20 and 48, were arrested and charged with possession of suspected stolen property.
Police also seized the recovered batteries and the Toyota Quantum allegedly used in the commission of the crime.
The suspects are expected to appear in the Tlhabane Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 8 June 2026. SAPS said it remains committed to combating crimes targeting critical infrastructure, warning that such offences negatively impact service delivery, economic activity and community safety.

Yusuf Omar from Omar’s Motor Den, who was arrested yesterday when the @RSASIU pounced, was not charged.
He apparently insisted on “proper service” before the execution of any order and objected to the SIU removing a white Bentley from the dealership floor, maintaining that it was not the vehicle referred to in the order.
It is understood that the detention related to the alleged obstruction of officials during the operation.
However, following intervention by attorneys and clarification of the order, the order was complied with “under a strict reservation of rights”, and Omar was later released without charge.
Sources say that Omar’s Motor Den may approach the courts for relief should a suitable and cost-effective arrangement not be reached with the curator and the SIU.
