A year ago he was lifting the Premier League trophy at Liverpool as a hometown hero. Untouchable at Anfield. Generational passer. One of the faces of modern football.

Now? People are genuinely calling him a Madrid bench player.

And honestly… the truth is probably somewhere in the middle.

At Liverpool, everything was built to maximise Trent. Klopp gave him freedom. Runners moved around him. The crowd trusted him even after mistakes because he WAS Liverpool.

Madrid is different.

At Real Madrid you are not the project. You are just another superstar expected to perform instantly.

No patience. No emotional attachment. No “he’s one of our own” protection.

And when your biggest weakness is defending, every bad game gets amplified 10x at the Bernabéu.

The scary part is he does not even look fully confident anymore.

Sometimes he plays like a guy overthinking every touch instead of the fearless creator we watched at Liverpool. The Hollywood passes are less frequent. The swagger feels lower.

Still flashes of brilliance though. That Juventus assist reminded everyone what he can do.

But consistency? That’s the issue.

Then you add the England situation.

Tuchel leaving him out repeatedly says a lot. Reece James, Lewis-Skelly and others are getting picked because they currently look sharper physically and defensively.

A year ago leaving Trent out would have caused riots on Football Twitter 😭

Now people barely react.

That’s how fast football changes.

I still think calling it a “downfall” is premature. He’s 27, not 37. Elite talent does not disappear overnight.

But I also think Liverpool fans were right about one thing:

Sometimes you only realise how perfect a club-system-player relationship was after it ends.

Anfield covered his flaws and amplified his genius better than any place in world football.

Can he turn it around at Madrid? Absolutely.

But right now this feels less like a Galáctico success story and more like a brutal football identity crisis.
