Good news!

Manu is finally aboard the #ElephantAmbulance, ready to depart for the #ElephantHospital in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh. As Manu is in a lot of pain with fragile legs, our team had to be extremely cautious while loading him onto the ambulance.He was quite wary of the process and had to be gently coaxed with the help of plenty of treats like sugarcanes, cucumbers and bananas. Our caregiver also stayed by his side through the whole process, murmuring words of encouragement to him. The duration of the drive will depend on Manu's temperament and medical condition during the journey. We will keep you posted throughout.

"Bambi, Maia, and Guillermina are currently spending time in Yard 5 together. When the caregivers have brought breakfast to them for the last couple of days, Guille has opted to take hers alone in the tree line.

Typically, even if she’s hanging out in the woods, once she hears the 4-wheelers drive up, she will join the other elephants, since she knows food will soon be coming. But lately, she’s been choosing to stay in her favorite spot in the woods and let us bring breakfast closer to her, rather than join the other ladies. Perhaps she’s taken to the shade because of how warm the days have been recently. Or it’s possible that she wanted a little quiet time on her own. Whatever the reason, we obviously honor her wishes and meet her where she is. When it comes to Guille, she will almost always seek out her friends after too long. Generally, by the time the caregivers swing back by to do Bambi’s treatment in the late morning, Guille has joined back up with her friends for some afternoon relaxing. "

It’s EleFact Friday again and this time we’re addressing a rumor that we’ve heard many times about #elephants in the wild. There is a common thought that fruit that gets left to decompose can often become fermented, and today we wanted to look into this further to see if it’s true.

Historically, stories have been shared that animals of several species, including elephants, have been known to eat fallen fruit and appear to be intoxicated. From African elephants supposedly eating overripe fruit from the marula tree, to a moose getting stuck in a tree after eating too many rotten apples, these stories range far and wide. The truth is that the amount of fruit that an elephant would need to eat to account for their large mass would be in large quantities, almost to the point where it would be impossible to eat that much.

In comparison to humans, studies have shown that elephants don’t break down and metabolize ethanol as quickly as we can. In fact, human bodies possess an enzyme in the ADH7 gene that can help us metabolize ethanol 40 times faster than other primates. Elephants, and even their mammoth ancestors, do not possess this gene at all.

In the wild, if elephants were exposed to large amounts of fruit rotten on the ground, there could be a very slim possibility that eventually, after eating as much as they possibly can, they may feel a bit of a “buzz,” since they don’t possess the metabolizing gene. It seems as if this elephant myth is more of a question that may not have an answer; maybe we should call today EleTHEORY Friday instead?

This week, our Sunday Smile follows Rana as she shows off her new hat made of branches. You might be used to seeing Maia and Guillermina with hay hats, but today Rana is joining in the fun by adding a little browse to her head.

You can see Mara touching the inside of her leg, which is likely a way to show affection to Rana. The two have been enjoying their time together and having lots of vocal parties wherever they go.
