Q: What were the highlights of the TASTE event?
A: Pulling off the 10 day marathon during the Christmas holidays of 2019/2020 was both challenging and rewarding. Serving a packed house on a daily basis was a tall order. It however proved how successful the concept was.
Q: Does the comeback brunch at FF involve AU?
A: No. TASTE was cut due to covid as our 1 yr collabo ended. Threw off talks abt a closer partnership to drive concepts on other days. It's within their right to continue on their own as long as there's no reference to TASTE.
Q: TASTE seemed to bear the AccraUnplugged hallmark of serving something new each time, right?
A: Exactly. The concept was never stagnant as the culinary offering, artwork, DJs changed each month. We always like our guests to identify with this positive lifestyle & mindset.
Q: The theme for TASTE was "Art-Music-Food". Why?
A: It embedded the concept in the FatFish space. We introduced rotating artwork on walls to create a conversation. Having great music by handpicked DJs gave us the eclectic vibe. The 4 course brunch maintained the FF identity.
Q: What inspired the "TASTE" brunch?
A: Actually the name came last. First we were certain our audience needed a wknd daytime affair. For Saturday morning foodies in Accra, it's either street spot or hotel. We blended in the fun of the former with the latter's finesse.
Q: How did you go from JustMusic to arguably the best brunch offering in the capital?
A: We were approached by Fatfish largely because of the reputation we built via JustMusic. We however took the creative license & imagined a new arts-based hospitality concept for the venue.
Q: What's the way forward for #JustMusic?
AU: We hope to apply lessons learnt and the built goodwill to chart the way forward. There's still nervousness for intimate settings like ours. But this won't last forever & we expect to be back sooner than later.
Q: Was #JustMusic able to showcase traditional Ghanaian music?
AU: No, unfortunately.. we attracted mostly urban afrofusion artistes. We hosted @SantrofiMusic high-life ensemble, a spectacular show in sound and energy. It awakened us to the potential to do more of such acts.
Q: Why the emphasis on 1 act per night?
AU: We were keen on highlighting artistes building themselves up to be great performers. We researched, auditioned where necessary & scored our acts. They each had a body of work significant enough to capture the imagination over 15 songs.
Q: Were there any challenges with organizing #JustMusic?
AU: There's no consensus that it's the smaller yet credible live music platforms that form the cultural building blocks of a music industry. We found artiste management teams who were yet to learn this & slow to move in.
Q: What made #JustMusic different from similar Accra live music hangouts?
AU: We featured a new artiste each week so the experience varied every time. Our guests grew attentive to & appreciative of this discovery process. That in turn set a high standard for visiting artistes.
Q: What made #JustMusic a staple?
AU: The amazing talent on display as well as consistency & high standards for programming & customer service. Shout-out to @Kasaprekogh for supporting along the way. Hopefully there'll be opportunities in future to realize the full vision.
Q: Were there standout #JustMusic moments?
AU: The coming together of @ELgh_ and @Bra_Ayisi (aka AI) culminated in the release of their EP. They struck a bond at our show, went on to record and would later return together to perform music from their dope new project! Lucky us!!
Q: What was the proudest achievement of #JustMusic?
AU: We produced 74 unique shows with only a handful comebacks, and worked with over 60 artistes week in week out to make this happen. In the process, we made worthy friends who shared our passion, integrity & work ethic.
