NASA’s battle-scarred Curiosity rover has been crawling across Mars since 2012, its aluminum wheels taking a relentless beating from the planet’s razor-sharp rocks. Over the years, those wheels have collected dents, holes, and snapped structural ribs known as “grousers”—the very features that keep them from folding like cheap soda cans. A few broken grousers? No big deal. Too many, though, and a wheel could cave inward, shredding the delicate wiring inside and leaving Curiosity stranded in the red dust.

Mission engineers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory aren’t sitting idle. They’ve already rewritten the rover’s driving playbook—scouting gentler routes and obsessively photographing the wheels with onboard cameras to catch damage early.

But they’ve also prepared a nuclear option: “wheel shedding.” If a wheel ever reaches the brink of collapse, Curiosity could deliberately slam its inner section against a carefully chosen sharp rock, then twist and grind until the damaged core tears free. What’s left would be a stripped-down but far tougher outer rim—proven in tests to still roll. The procedure would be slow, painstaking, and dependent on finding the perfect rock, potentially stretching across weeks. Yet it could mean the difference between a dead rover and one that keeps exploring.

Fortunately, current forecasts suggest Curiosity’s wheels still have years of life left. The dramatic self-amputation remains a last-resort contingency—one the team hopes stays safely on the drawing board.
