@Lakers think about it 😉
BREAKING: The Los Angeles Lakers are acquiring Walker Kessler from the Utah Jazz for unprotected first-round picks in 2031 and 2033 and first-round swaps in 2028 and 2030, sources tell ESPN. Kessler will sign a massive four-year, $130 million deal with the Lakers.
After eight seasons with the Lakers, including leading the franchise to the 2020 NBA championship, James departs and enters free agency set to join a new team.
Lakers president Rob Pelinka and Rich Paul spoke a short time ago about the four-time champion's plans, sources said. James chose to inform the Lakers well before start of free agency tonight out of courtesy and appreciation for their run together, and to allow LA to conduct its offseason business.
GENIUS LAKERS SOLUTION BY SAM QUINN!
LAKERS STEAL WALKER KESSLER FROM UTAH
Sam Quinn has proposed the Lakers tendering an offer sheet to Walker Kessler for a 3-year $130M max deal with a player option on 3rd year.
The offer is an obvious overpay but one that the Jazz are unlikely to match. First year would be $41.2M for year 1, $43.3M for year 2, and $45.5M for year 3. First year starts $13M more than Utah's last offer.
For the Lakers, the idea would be overpay for the first two years to acquire Kessler with the idea he would decline his player option for a longer term deal at lower salary, like isaiah Hartenstein just did with OKC.
For Kessler, it's a win-win situation. If he was overpaid, he can still secure a long term bag by taking a lower salary. If he was not overpaid, he declines the player option and becomes an unrestricted free agent.
This would be an offer designed to screw up the Jazz' cap situation so badly that the Jazz cannot match. It's NOT an attempt to force a sign-and-trade. It's an attempt to steal Kessler from Utah without giving up any draft capital or cap space.
It's a way of stealing an A-List center for nothing so the Lakers could then use the draft capital, cap space, and matching salaries to land a couple of wings.
In fact, the Lakers should set aside $41.25M of their $65M for Kessler and then proceed starting July 1 using their draft capital, cap space, and matching salaries to sign Robert Williams as backup center and Herb Jones or Trey Murphy III as 3&D wings.
The Lakers should wait until end of the moratorium on July 6 before making the offer to Kessler to surprise the Jazz and only give them 2 days to decide. The Jazz would then have until July 8 to match or decline.
If Jazz match, Lakers can look for Ware or Turner but also will have another shot at Kessler in 2 years. This is the kind of bold out-of-the-box move that the NBA should expect from the Mark Walter Lakers.
