What if there was a consensus on the tax reforms the UK needs?
What if it was backed by policy experts from think tanks across the political spectrum, from the Adam Smith Institute to the Resolution Foundation?
The consensus is real. The question is: will anyone act on it?
The leaked BBC dossier and the resignations of Tim Davie and Deborah Turness are reminders of the potential damage that can be done to public confidence in verifiable facts.
Statement from our CEO, Chris Morris:
We'll hear lots about the politics of tax increases in coming weeks-let's not forget the economics
Some tax raising options are particularly damaging to growth
However much revenue the Chancellor wants, reform of taxes - rather than just rate increases - should be a priority
The bond markets are simply the people and institutions who lend government money. We can avoid being “in hock” to them by reducing borrowing. We struggle now because our borrowing and debt are extremely high. Mr Burnham wants to increase borrowing.
Arguments against digital ID are paper thin. The reality is most voters now back them.
The Prime Minister should have the courage to embrace them in full.
Please know that this is baseless scaremongering from Trump and RFK.
There is no good scientific evidence linking paracetamol (Tylenol) to autism.
A 2024 Swedish study of 2.4 million births found no relationship whatsoever between exposure to paracetamol in utero & subsequent autism, ADHD or intellectual disability.
Likewise, there is no good evidence linking vaccines (of any kind) to autism.
Spreading medical disinformation is a disgusting abuse of political power with dangerous real world consequences.

First Past the Post stands to make a mockery of the electorate at the next election, boosting some parties and punishing others, all based on tiny differences in vote share. https://t.co/64SsCI7nPS
It's shocking how much consensus there is amongst tax policy wonks and economists of Left and Right on the tax reforms the UK needs to boost growth & make the tax system fairer
More shocking: they're reforms that are never mentioned by any politicians
I went to my local supermarket today and complained that I have a trade deficit with them. I subsidize them hundreds of dollars a month and get nothing in return. (Besides food but who cares). It is a rip off and they have been doing it for years! It stops now. From now on I am imposing an extra expense on myself, when I buy their goods. They may laugh now, but we all know they are going to cave and make a deal.
Today might be the day Donald Trump slaps tariffs on UK goods — because he thinks VAT is a tariff. Yes, he's wrong. But the reason *why* he's wrong is surprisingly deep.
So here's a 🧵 on the nerdy detail of VAT: via beer, Jaffa Cakes and an economic theorem from 1936.
As we've highlighted many times @TheIFS, the tax system has a damaging cliff edge at £100k. For some people with kids in nursery, earning an extra £1 can make you over £20,000 worse off!

We @TheIFS identified big errors in ONS wealth estimates. (They didn’t correct for inflation when valuing pensions). They’ve fixed those without acknowledging they were mistakes. But have introduced a new flaw which takes a cool £2.3 trillion from wealth estimates for 2020.
