Presenting here in @FCPSMaryland today on retrieval practice. Here is a 🧵on some of the insights I will be sharing. Very quickly we begin to forget new learning we are exposed to. When spaced out retrieval practice helps to slow the rate.

Been a minute but captured some before and after writing samples… These students are in grade 2 and started out with extremely low reading and writing abilities, look at them now!
@BenisonMrs I look at what difficulties students have in both reading and writing and then work on those blending/segmenting skills. E.g. if they’re missing an internal consonant sound like a in a CCVCC word, I’ll focus the instruction on that…. But also following the progression of skills!
Some data worth smiling over! 8 grade 2 sts, 17 weeks of learning… started at kindy / grade 1 level. Blue: above, green: at, yellow: just below, orange: low, red: concern against a grade 2 level. Bring on the next group of sts and I will remember to plot before / after!😊😴
@pernilleripp Herve Tullet ‘press here’ to create his ‘field of flowers’ in his art book. As a grp or individual page. Each student has one paint colour. follow instructions such as paint a dot, paint a circle. move around to the next piece of paper w new instruction. https://t.co/Ie9oDa8NHh
New group of students and we’re loving making comics based on Mo Willems’ book “don’t let the pigeon stay up late!’ we mapped the emotions of the pigeon & created our own pigeon story. Stay tuned, students will be making their own comic with their own characters and story map!
It is such a treat being a teacher! I said goodbye to these little gems after 5 months and now on to a new group of children to help with literacy and numeracy 💪
