When Prempeh College and Opoku Ware School were founded, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Agyeman Prempeh II, bestowed upon each institution one of the most revered symbols of authority in Asanteman. Through this extraordinary gesture, he formally welcomed them into the Asante Kingdom, established their place within its rich history, as the two foremost royal boys’ secondary schools of the kingdom.

•Prempeh College was presented with a replica of the sacred Golden Stool (Sika Dwa Kofi), while
•Opoku Ware School received a replica of the revered Mpomponsuo Sword.

The Mpomponsuo Sword occupies a unique place in the Asante constitutional tradition. No individual can become Asantehene without first swearing the Great Oath upon this sacred sword. Created by the legendary Okomfo Anokye for the Asantehene Opoku Ware I, it symbolises legitimacy, authority, loyalty, and duty. Paramount chiefs and sub-chiefs swear their oaths of allegiance upon it, and although it belongs to the Asante State, it is regarded as the personal sword of the Asantehene.

The Golden Stool, on the other hand, is the very soul of the Asante Kingdom. Revered as the ultimate symbol of Asante nationhood, it transcends even the person of the King himself. The official title of the Asantehene is “Occupant of the Golden Stool.” During enstoolment, the chosen king is ritually raised and lowered over the Golden Stool three times without making physical contact with it, signifying the transfer of ancestral authority and divine legitimacy. In many monarchies, the crown belongs to the king; in Asanteman, the king belongs to the Stool.

To this day, these traditions continue within the two schools. Before assuming office as Head Boy of Opoku Ware School, the elected student leader swears an oath upon the school’s replica of the Mpomponsuo Sword. Likewise, before becoming Head Boy of Prempeh College, the elected prefect is ceremonially raised and lowered over the replica of the Golden Stool three times, echoing the sacred rites of Asante kingship.

Beyond these symbolic traditions, Prempeh College and Opoku Ware School have distinguished themselves as two of Ghana’s most accomplished secondary schools. For decades, they have produced outstanding leaders, professionals, academics, clergy, entrepreneurs, and public servants who have contributed significantly to national development.

Their rivalry, often regarded as one of the greatest in Ghanaian education, is fierce yet healthy. It is a rivalry rooted not in division, but in excellence, a constant pursuit of academic achievement, leadership, discipline, sportsmanship, and service. Generation after generation, both institutions have pushed each other to greater heights, elevating standards and inspiring students to strive for greatness.

The Golden Stool and the Mpomponsuo Sword are therefore more than ceremonial relics within these schools. They are enduring reminders of a royal heritage, a legacy of leadership, and a commitment to excellence that continues to define Prempeh College and Opoku Ware School as the twin pillars of boys’ education in Asanteman.
