SENATE RECONVENES PLENARY AFTER RECESS

The Senate has resumed plenary after its annual recess, with the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, listing insecurity, flooding and the high cost of living as pressing national concerns.

He decried the abduction of Nigerians in Marisa and at Dekera Mosque, saying sympathy is not enough, and called on security agencies to rescue captives and protect vulnerable communities with renewed vigour.

The Senate President also urged leaders to ensure that economic reforms reflect in the lives of ordinary Nigerians, and called for peaceful, issue-based campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections, stressing that no electoral prize is worth a Nigerian life.

Six communications from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, seeking confirmation of appointments, approval of the 2026 NDDC budget and passage of establishment bills, including the bill seeking to establish the National Research and Development Fund, were read and referred to the relevant committees.

Senate also mourned the demise of the former Governor of Kogi State Ibrahim Idris and the late Emir of Gumel, Ahmed Muhammad Sani.

FG DECLARES OCTOBER 1 PUBLIC HOLIDAY FOR 66th INDEPENDENCE ANNIVERSARY

The Federal Government has declared Thursday, October 1, 2026, a public holiday to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.

A statement by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Dr Magdalene Ajani, says the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, congratulates Nigerians at home and abroad on the celebration.

The Minister urges Nigerians to uphold unity, patriotism, peaceful coexistence and mutual respect, stressing that peace and stability are essential for national development.

The statement describes Nigeria’s diversity as a strength and called on citizens to emulate the patriotism of the nation’s founding fathers in building a country future generations can be proud of.

Israeli settlers reportedly stormed Beitunia and blocked major roads before withdrawing as Israeli forces deployed and fired live ammunition.

In al-Mughayyir, settlers reportedly torched a Palestinian home and several vehicles.

The Israeli military separately said settlers burned Palestinian buildings, vehicles and other property in Jalud.

The violence comes amid a broader surge in settler attacks across the West Bank this year, with Israeli security data previously showing a sharp increase in incidents.

89-Yr-Old Imo Man and Son Sentenced to Death

An 89-year-old man, Pa Everestus Okereke, and his eldest son, Ugochukwu, are facing execution in Imo State after spending a decade behind bars for a crime allegedly committed by another relative.

The tragedy began in 2016 when Pa Okereke's younger son allegedly fled after a fight resulted in another man's death. Authorities detained Pa Okereke and his first son in place of the missing suspect, and both were sentenced to death by hanging in September 2022.

🚨🇮🇱🇷🇺🇺🇦 The flydubai scare may have been far worse than a cockpit fight, with authorities looking into whether one of the pilots deliberately tried to CRASH the plane.

One pilot reportedly sharply pointed the plane downward, and the other fought him off and pulled it out of the dive.

The plane dropped 14,125 feet in just 29 seconds.

A passenger said that they heard shouting, and when the cockpit door opened there was blood inside, with one of the pilots hit with a folding knife.

Passengers and crew stepped in to break up the fight, and at one point people on board thought they wouldn't make it out alive.

The captain is reportedly Russian and the first officer is Ukrainian.

174 passengers, including 27 children, were on the plane that has since landed safely in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.

It was tracked at an altitude of around 5,000ft close to Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Saudi before disappearing

Tracking data stopped, which is unusual as it usually only stops when the flight has landed

That's a big U-turn from Labour's 2024 manifesto, which ruled out all 3.

Any new policy would go into Labour's next election manifesto, and that election could be 3 years away.

There's also no guarantee Brussels would give Britain whatever deal it asks for.
