Australian Asexuals is holding a contest - and making a book! "Asexual Creative + Expressive Submissions" is an art, writing + colouring contest with fun prizes, + we're collating all the entries into a book.

@alexrubner @MatHempell @AussieAsexuals Some of us are regularly treated as freaks, told we don't exist, told we need 'fixing', having our sense of sexual consent ignored, abused in any number of ways - sometimes as a 'cure', sometimes just because. That sounds like a group of people who need advocacy.

Why should I tell you the traumas that I have personally suffered and which justify my activism, when @AussieAsexuals has already gone into detail to justify what they do and you just haven't believed them?

@alexrubner @MatHempell @AussieAsexuals I must have written about my experiences so many times + so have numerous others and yet we're forever back again explaining why asexuals experience oppression by talking about it again and again to people who delight in deliberately retraumatising us.

@alexrubner @MatHempell @AussieAsexuals Our members needs advocacy. I, this Twitter manager, need advocacy and I'd explain why but I'm not obligated to justify this organisation's existence by talking about my own trauma and it seems like I am frequently expected to.

We experience oppression, and we talk about it.

@MatHempell @AussieAsexuals @alexrubner When we talk about Sex Positivity, we always encourage the maxim that "being positive about sexual decisions means being positive aboue ALL decisions - including the decision NOT to have sex"

Lots of people may choose not to have sex - for so many reasons. All are valid.

@alexrubner @AussieAsexuals There is not enough research. Our work is purely based on responses to our surveys. Our researchers are volunteers and they work in their spare time - they have professional expertise in various fields, but we have no funding or institutional support.

@alexrubner @AussieAsexuals Because people can tell you when they first knew they were asexual and when they experienced abuse. You can ask in research.

Or people can tell you "I told someone I was asexual and he said that I would like it if I tried and it then he raped me." (This story is VERY common)

@AceArchive The Ace friendly sexual health clinic advising us recommends colposcopy as a much less distressing test - and it's now standard in Australia.

It is also their advice that every cervix-owner over 25 should be screened, regardless of sexual history.

Are you using a Samsung phone? We have been in touch with SurveyMonkey about people experiencing issues with the survey, + unfortunately they have given us the very unsatisfactory reply that this sometimes occurs. So far, we have only encountered the issue on Samsung devices.
