💔UPDATE💔🐿️ It’s with great sadness to reveal that the healthy population of red squirrels at Rutter Falls near Appleby have been wiped out by the pox greys carry and spread 😭😢 I was informed this afternoon #nature#redsquirrel I’m devastated for Jim who lives there and needless to say the reds.
If you want to learn more about why etc then look here: https://t.co/qNJbyG3hOT
I’m honestly gutted. I’d see reds often at Rutter Falls. Visitors and locals loved seeing them! 🐿️🐿️😢
Forgive me if I don’t reply much. I’m genuinely upset. I got to know the reds at beautiful Rutter Falls and the place features in my film ‘Cumbrian Red’.
I can’t believe how quickly the reds have been wiped out. I’m gutted but bloody angry too that more isn’t done to inform the wider public by big charities, local authorities and government about a legally protected, iconic and national favourite species! 💔😢🐿️
When will folk realise far and wide such invasive species can be devastating to our habitats and ecosystems??? 🤬🤬
🚨POX OUTBREAK!🚨 I’ve been informed there’s an outbreak of the dreaded Squirrel Pox Virus at Rutter Falls near @applebytown 💔😢🐿️
It ONLY TAKES ONE GREY SQUIRREL to get in amongst a healthy population of our endangered reds and they can be wiped out in just weeks 😢
PLEASE KEEP YA EYES PEELED. Report any sightings of greys or badly reds ASAP to the Penrith & District Red Squirrel Group: https://t.co/Q74Lg6JZkG
Grey squirrels are one of the most invasive species in the world. They cause terrible harm to habitats, properties and native red squirrel populations.
Needless to say, poor Jim at Rutter Falls is devastated and will be trying his best at first light today to mitigate the spread and locate the non-native grey squirrel.

To anyone about to #flood wide gaffer tape holds out the #floodwater for a good while. ( I've tested it in a proper testing tank.) Even when it does leak, it holds back a lot of water. So leave it on. @FloodSaxworld on the inside will help hold back leakage.
⚠️ 17 flood alerts are still in place today! Flooding is possible.
⚠️ 3 flood warnings are in place today! Flooding is expected.
❌ 9 flood warnings removed

I've been asked to circulate a snow depth map. This fall in Cumbria is a unique incident and worthy of investigation by academics. Need proper depths., no drifts https://t.co/HYGCxjR8Lz @FellFoodie@CazGraham1 @DrEdHenderson @PhilSipocz or send to me. Please spread word #Cumbria
Good to see @EnvAgency have ditched automated flood warnings and reinstated ones with context and narrative from duty flood officers.
