We call on the @AlboMP gov to condemn the gender-apartheid imposed on women in Afghanistan & the systematic persecution of ethnic groups such as the Hazaras.
Aus gov must work with with the UN & aid agencies to ensure equitable distribution of aid.

The @AlboMP gov has a moral obligation to the people of 🇦🇫.
Bureaucratic processes cannot trump our moral obligation to the ppl of 🇦🇫
Other countries are able to undertake checks & we've undertaken checks previously in the Middle East.

Last night's #AustralianStory reminded us what is possible when people, communities & government work together to respond to a humanitarian crisis.
The efforts of the ppl featured in this story provided hope to ppl, saved lives & allowed children to have a future.

It is therefore disappointing that the current @AlboMP gov & Minister @andrewjgiles have effectively abandoned processing of humanitarian visa applications for 1000s in 🇦🇫 attempting to flee the Taliban.

The humanitarian crisis in 🇦🇫 is escalating & people continue to flee the Taliban. The @AlboMP gov's abandonment of visa processing for those fleeing the Taliban only makes it worse.
We have a moral obligation to do more & must not abandon the people of 🇦🇫
While we welcome this announcement, the @AlboMP gov must do more to fulfil its moral obligation to the people of 🇦🇫, including by committing to 20k emergency humanitarian places for those fleeing the Taliban & expediting the processing for humanitarian & family reunion visas.
This news means that around 5k ppl from🇦🇫, mostly from the long persecuted Hazara ethnic group, will be granted permanent safety in Aus & will not face the prospect of being returned to Taliban ruled 🇦🇫
This was a key ask since the fall of Kabul in 2021

The @theage editorial today:
"We were willing to spend more than $7 billion pursuing war in Afghanistan. For a fraction of that cost we could increase the Afghan refugee intake".

Women in Afg are deprived of their most basic human rights.
Despite a repressive regime they continue to protest for equal rights & justice.
The Australian government has a moral obligation to take #ActionforAfghanistan
📢📢 MEDIA RELEASE 📢📢
We condemn, in the strongest terms, the announcement on Dec 21, from the Taliban Ministry of Education, to indefinitely ban women from accessing universities across Afghanistan & urge action from the Australian Government.

The Government must also do more to expedite existing family & partner visa applications. 7,209 people from 🇦🇫 are waiting for their Partner Visa to be processed, with a current medium waiting time for visa processing over three years. This must be addressed urgently. 7/8
