When a bullying scandal broke out at Alliance, Matiangi rushed there to cover it up because he wanted to maintain the reputation of the school as "prestigious, comfortable and nice." Matiang'i protected school elitism in the name of fighting exam cheating.

It was under Matiang'i that I understood that the government needs these elite schools, first, for training the kids of the top state officials; two, to keep Kenyans believing that the school system, and the entire colonial state, work. You see, Kenya operates on the fake idea of "merit" and qualifications as a way to discriminate against the majority of Kenyans. It needs to justify poverty and unemployment by saying that the Kenyans are "unqualified." There's no way keep that social hierarchy without having elite schools that all Kenyans fight, bribe and grovel to get into, and then telling those who don't get in that the problem was their "intelligence" or they trained in the wrong subjects.

I also saw it when GoK was implementing CBC. When some of us where saying CBC will discriminate against the poor, Jogoo House people kept going to posh and elite schools to show the media cameras and Kenyans that the school system is working as it should. The inequality and social hierarchy in Kenya depends primarily on the school system. GoK protects the school inequality because it has to keep the majority poor.

I hate how casually this topic is discussed, especially on TikTok, because it exposes just how deep privilege runs in these conversations. People throw around terms like “low IQ” as if they are making an objective observation, when in reality it is just a sanitised way of saying poor.

The people being labelled this way are the same ones being recruited as goons, bribed with as little as 200 shillings, and then discarded. That doesn’t happen because they lack intelligence but because poverty limits choice.
And poverty itself is produced and maintained by political elites who benefit from desperation. They underfund education, destroy livelihoods, and hollow out public institutions, then turn around and blame the very people they’ve pushed to the margins for being “backward” or “stupid.” It’s a convenient lie that shifts responsibility away from power and onto its victims.

This is where democracy comes in. Democracy is not designed to reward the educated, the articulate, or the morally confident. It exists to ensure that even those society looks down on still have equal rights, equal political power, and equal dignity. The fact that someone had access to education enough to become a doctor or a professional is not proof of superior intellect or morality. It is proof of access. Many others were denied that access long before they ever had a chance to prove what they were capable of.

Change, real change, begins with empathy ,with understanding how systems shape behaviour and choices. If you cannot grasp that, if you insist on reducing structural injustice to insults about intelligence, then you are not making an intelligent argument at all. You are simply using the language of superiority to mask a failure to understand how power actually works.
