My theory is that Jade and Tabitha are meant to die every cycle because the hope tied to the Bottle Tree is what keeps bringing them back. They're trapped in an endless game: return, fight, fail, repeat.

If they finally save the children, the cycle ends, the souls are freed, and the Man in Yellow loses his source of hope and fear.

But if the Bottle Tree is destroyed first, that hope disappears. No more reincarnation. No more second chances. Jade and Tabitha's next deaths become permanent... and the game ends with everyone losing.

Maybe that's why the Man in Yellow warned them it was a bad idea.
