Canada 1-1 Bosnia & Herzegovina.
Canada used their usual 3-2-5 attacking structure, with Laryea (LB) moving into the left half-space. In the closing stages, when they needed a goal, they took more risks and shifted into a 3-1-6, which eventually helped them find the equalizer.
Some of Canada's best chances came through great individual actions in the box from Oluwaseyi (CF) and Larin (CF). Canada looked much more threatening down the left side than the right, and they created their most dangerous moments when progressing through short central combinations rather than crosses, where Bosnia held a clear aerial advantage. Laryea (LB) had a great game and a big influence in the last third.
Bosnia found an early goal from a corner and spent much of the match protecting their lead, defending deep in a very compact and competitive 4-4-2 block. Interestingly, when they introduced Ivan Sunjic, a defensive midfielder, and switched to a 4-1-4-1 to gain more defensive control, they conceded the equalizer almost immediately afterward.
Bosnia lacked threat in transition, largely because their two strikers can offer little in that phase of the game. Esmir Bajraktarevic's influence also diminishes when Bosnia is forced to defend deep for extended periods and can't keep the ball.
It was a very physical match with a lot of crosses, aerial duels and set pieces. Although Bosnia had fewer set-piece opportunities, they looked considerably more dangerous from them than Canada. One aspect Canada handled well was their variety of short-corner routines, which nearly paid off and made perfect sense against a Bosnian side with a significant height advantage.
I know Mexico are stronger than Canada, but the biggest difference between South Africa and Bosnia against the hosts has been mentality.
South Africa looked overwhelmed from the start. Bosnia, on the other hand, donβt look intimidated at all, They're not trying to do anything extraordinary, they're simply playing the football that got them here.
Itβs a defensive setup, but theyβre still calm on the ball, not affected by the atmosphere, and when their set-piece chance came, they took it.
Massive respect for that first half. Whether they hold on or not, theyβve shown more composure and belief than expected.
