Actually the whole whipping with thorny ropes until the person acting as Jesus reaches the designated crucifixion spot and gets crucified for a few minutes though it depends I believe. The nails are sanitized as much as possible too.

Surprisingly as it sounds, many people in my country do this kind of penitence. Though the most common one is the whipping of one's back with thorny ropes(idk the proper english).

@nonregemesse I think Heraclius is easily one of THE biggest comebacks in history. People don't really understand that Heraclius was fielding the LAST Field Army the Empire can muster. No more spare troops, no second chances. If he lost even once, the Empire would've died then and there.
