What a fantastic week in Monterey Bay, California! @naturetrektours guests saw Blue, Humpback and Killer Whales, 5 species of dolphin including Risso’s, and multitudes of seabirds such as Black-footed Albatross! Topping it off were wonderful views of Sea Otters. Brilliant!

Mt Charleston didn’t disappoint! Our @naturetrektours guests enjoyed mountain specialities such as Cassin’s Finch, the endemic Palmer’s Chipmunk, Clark’s Nutcracker and Broad-tailed Hummingbird. Great ending to our 2 week tour through Southern California!

A real surprise yesterday for our @naturetrektours guests was this wonderful Lewis’s Woodpecker. Seen at a desert oasis outside Las Vegas, it joined large numbers of migrants as they refueled ready for their onward journey north.

Wonderful few days in the California deserts. Our @naturetrektours guests enjoyed desert cacti, incredible landscapes, and wildlife such as Desert Iguana, Bendire’s Thrasher, Lucy’s Warbler, Kit Fox and Scott’s Oriole. Next, to a “sky island” mountain outside Las Vegas!

Incredible end to the first week for our @naturetrektours guests in California. Pacific Rattlesnake, huge migration of buntings, warblers, tanagers, grosbeaks, orioles etc at the Salton Sea, Burrowing Owls, and we found a vagrant Scissor-tailed Flycatcher! Now on to the deserts..

Incredible boat trip to the Channel Islands for our @naturetrektours guests in South California. Close Minke Whales, Common Dolphins, and lots of seabirds including Scripps’s Murrelet, Rhinocerous Auklet, Pink-footed Shearwater, 3 Skua sp, and loads more. Great start to the tour!

Fantastic @naturetrektours “Reptiles, Amphibians and other Desert Wildlife” tour in Arizona. 33 herps including Western Diamondback Rattlesnake, Regal Horned Lizard, Sonoran Mountain Kingsnake & 22 lizard species. 190 birds, 50 butterflies and 20 mammals including mountain lion!

The Chiricahua Mountains in SE Arizona are living up to their reputation as a premier wildlife destination. Today our @naturetrektours guests had excellent views of the highly localized Mexican Spotted Owl today as it rested and preened. Just wonderful!

On our last #Naturetrektailormade day we saw many of California’s Pacific coast specialities. Sea Otters loafed on the ocean while Black Turnstones and Pigeon Guillemots cruised the rocky coast. A fantastic end to an incredible 10-day California adventure! @naturetrektours

Any snake day is a good day in our book (Pacific Gopher Snake). Any California Condor day is also a great day! On our penultimate #Naturetrektailormade day in California we also saw Merriam’s Chipmunk, and Western Fence Lizards were in summer plumage! @naturetrektours

A very exciting night drive completed our #Naturetrektailormade day in California’s dry San Juaquin Valley. An incredible 6 Kit Foxes, both Giant and San Juaquin Kangaroo Rats, Striped Skunk, vocalizing Sierran Tree Frog, and a Barn Owl (making for a 4 owl day!) @naturetrektours

Our #Naturetrektailormade day in California’s dry San Juaquin Valley was in 2 halves. Daytime was dominated by predators. Long-eared and Burrowing Owl, Roadrunner and the incredible Ferruginous Hawk, largest buteo in the world. @naturetrektours

#Naturetrektailormade guest experienced the wonders of geese galore in California’s Central Valley today! 5 species in spectacular numbers (Cackling and Ross’s as specialties) with 20 species of wildfowl and 101 species of bird, including the special Phainopela. @naturetrektours

Our last #Naturetrektailormade day along the California coast was phenomenal! We started with 6 American River Otters playing; then we saw a Long-tailed Weasel hunting Gophers; and best of all we saw 4 Bobcats, 2 of whom were vocalizing, hunting and socializing! @naturetrektours

Day 5 of #Naturetrektailormade tour to California started with an unusual shore-based Black-footed Albatross! Then we went north over Golden Gate Bridge to Point Reyes where Tule Elk and Harbor Seal gave good views. Great Horned Owl and Gray Fox ended the day! @naturetrektours

Three species of owl before dawn assured a great day 3 on our #Naturetrektailormade California tour. We successfully searched San Mateo’s Peninsula for elusive animals such as Western Gray Squirrel, Rough-skinned Newt, Pileated Woodpecker & California Thrasher. @naturetrektours

Dawn on the 2nd #Naturetrektailormade day in California had us watching a Merlin buzzing flocks of waders on San Mateo’s bayside. A Gray Hairstreak and Red-shouldered Hawk sunbathed, while Chestnut-backed Chickadees and a Harlequin Duck made for a fantastic day! @naturetrektours
