These figures represent the median across thousands of projected outcomes. This graph is a sample of what a graph may look like for these players.

Because Mead has no minor league options remaining, a significant portion of his left-tail (weaker) outcomes result in him falling off the roster and leaving the organization before reaching the end of his team-control years (which would equal negative or zero SV).

Conversely, Early has multiple option years remaining, so in a very high percentage of outcomes he remains in the organization for rest of team control (would stay with org in AAA in left-tail outcomes).

It's very possible that the Red Sox's models project Mead to have a higher upside (right-tail outcomes) than Early and believe he's likely to remain on the roster throughout his remaining years of team control. Because of this Mead may have a higher “mean” value (as opposed to median) than Early. BTV uses median outcomes, I believe.

Feels like a very similar move for the #Dodgers acquiring controllable RP Brock Stewart last July who has since struggled with injury.

Halvorsen is younger with more team control (4.5 years) but I anticipate them making similar tweaks to Halvorsen that they made to Stewart:

- Increased breaking ball usage
- Increased usage with more depth on off-speed offering
- Greater FB/CH vertical separation
