the deeper issue isn’t that mbappé lacks character. it’s that his game still depends way too much on the game giving him the kind of problem he was built to solve.
watch him when the game gets ugly. the first thing that changes isn’t his effort, it’s his decision-making. he starts playing safer. he comes toward the ball when the better move is to pin the centre-back, takes fewer risks between the lines, and sometimes receives with his body already setting up the next action instead of facing the defender. he’s still involved, sure, but the authority kinda disappears.
and that matters because mbappé’s natural game is all about threat: attack the space, isolate the defender, accelerate, finish. when the game is clean, everything feeds into everything else. when it gets dirty, those advantages start getting taken away. the opponent sits deeper, blocks the channel, kills the transition, puts contact into every duel. now mbappé has to create value without the space that normally gives him the advantage.
cristiano had a different answer to that problem. over time, he built an identity around surviving games where he wasn’t playing well. he’d make himself ugly to deal with: attack the second ball, live in the box, demand the cross, make the same run again, battle defenders physically, shoot early, stay around the decisive zone. he could have an awful 70 minutes and still carry himself like scoring the goal was his responsibility.
mbappé can sometimes look like he’s waiting for the game to become recognisable again.
and there’s a psychological thing underneath that. when you’ve spent most of your career being the devastating solution, being ordinary starts to feel uncomfortable. you begin protecting your involvement instead of forcing it. you’re not necessarily hiding physically; you’re hiding inside technically acceptable actions. safe reception. simple pass. move away from the duel. wait for the next transition.
he knows how to hurt a team when there’s space in behind. he knows how to beat a full-back one-on-one. he knows how to attack the box. what’s still less developed is taking ownership of a game that simply refuses to give him those situations.
that’s the part cristiano mastered.
cristiano’s big-game character wasn’t just “he wanted it more.” it was that his behaviour stayed aggressive even after his preferred game disappeared. mbappé still has those moments where, once the first two or three solutions are taken away, he gets quieter.
the next step for him isn’t becoming some superhero. it’s learning to say, “fine. if the game won’t give me space, i’ll still find a way to control it.”
that means becoming dangerous through positioning, combinations, physical duels, second actions, manipulating the back line, and just doing the same thing over and over until something breaks — not just relying on acceleration.
until that becomes instinctive, ugly games are going to keep exposing the same weakness: not a lack of talent, but a dependence on the conditions being right.
Call for help.
My mum was hit with a stroke in may 2024.
Since then our lives haven't remained the same. My family have spent all our savings yet her condition hasn't changed.
She has severe BP challenge, she has diabetes. Which has gone on to take a toll on her kidneys.
