She is 21 years old.

She fires an assault rifle, a grenade launcher, a mortar, and an artillery cannon — knee-deep in mud if necessary. She can command an artillery unit. She holds alpine climbing skills.

This is not a superhero film.

This is Daryna from Ternopil, a graduate of the National Army Academy, now serving in the artillery of the 128th Heavy Mechanised Brigade “Dyke Pole.”

She decided she wanted to be in the military in school. The only question was where to apply. She chose Lviv. She chose artillery.

“In my group there were only six girls. By 2022, some groups had dozens — 40, 60. The full-scale invasion radically changed the life plans of many people.”

When she told her parents, they tried to talk her out of it. For a long time. With many arguments.

Then Russia invaded. And her father joined the military too — territorial defence. His unit is now holding the line in Sumy region.

“When my father understood I was serious, he gave me probably the most valuable advice I ever received: if you’ve set your mind on something — go all the way. Never give up.”

She graduated. She chose her unit. She chose artillery.

In her academy class years ago: six girls. In 2022: forty. Sixty. Per group.

Ukraine is not running out of people willing to defend it.

It is running out of time for the world to understand what kind of people are doing it.
