@the_beardedsina Barcode alone would not work. They can be duplicated endlessly. They only identify the product type, not the specific item. They also require a capturing device which would affect mass adoption.
In 2010, @NafdacAgency launched the Mobile Authentication Service (MAS). MAS allows consumers to confirm drug authenticity by scratching a label on the product’s packaging and texting the revealed PIN to a verification number. The response comes back within seconds, confirming the product name, manufacturer, and a contact number. The SMS is toll-free.
Where MAS Falls Short:
- The PIN is per product type, not per individual item unit.
- The same code can also be queried multiple times by different people with no flag raised, so it could be duplicated endlessly.
My Proposed Solution: USSD/SMS + Unique Scratch Codes
I’m proposing a three-layer identity per drug where each manufacturer would have their own ID space:
-Manufacturer ID, which identifies the manufacturer
-Product ID, which identifies the drug type
-Item Code, which is unique to that specific unit
If for example a company named Brishat produces CiproBris:
BRSH = Brishat’s manufacturer prefix
CPB = CiproBris (their specific product)
X7K2M9QP = That particular unit rolling off the production line
The full code on a pack might look like BRSH-CPB-X7K2M9QP, and the scratch-off reveals the unique item portion.
“First Query Wins” Mechanism
The first phone number to query a code is registered as the legitimate owner and gets a certified response. If a different number queries the same code afterwards, the system returns a response (“Already verified by someone else, possible counterfeit”), flags it immediately and @NafdacAgency can act accordingly.
Network failures are covered because the same number can re-query as many times as needed. It is only when a different number queries the same code that an alert is triggered.
USSD/SMS works on any phone, no internet needed, making this accessible to everyone.
Because the system logs which phone number queried which item code, @NafdacAgency could also push a broadcast SMS or USSD to every number that verified a recalled batch, turning the verification system into a public health safety net.
Recommendations:
- Code printing security: Scratch codes must be printed in a tamper-evident, secure facility, otherwise they can be faked at source
- Manufacturer onboarding: Every legitimate manufacturer must register item codes into the central database before distribution
- Database uptime: The USSD system must be highly reliable; a failed query could be mistaken for a fake product
- Short code ownership: @NafdacAgency or a trusted body must own and operate the short code, not a private vendor
This is buildable. The greatest bottleneck however would be policy and enforcement, getting manufacturers to comply and keeping the database honest.
Tech Bros and App developers.
An idea came to mind this morning. Is it doable?
I sketched in my Diary.
Can we have an App or software whereby, every drug has a bar code. Once you buy a drug or medical item, you scan it and you're instantly notified if it is original or fake.
If it is fake, An alert is immediately sent to NAFDAC which means the app's algorithm will be integrated into NAFDAC's database
Every Authentic manufacturer too will have these bar codes.
For every Flag to NAFDAC, The alert will also trace the location of production and entire distribution chain of the fake manufacturers.
Is it a doable?
Thinking out loud.
I'm open to more discussions.

Where Is Nigeria’s President?
The dynamic President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, delivered a remarkable address at the 81st United Nations General Assembly. The international community has commended his leadership and the substance of his address. It is a reminder of what leadership can produce when competence, capacity, compassion, commitment and character come together in the service of a nation.
Against this background, many are asking: Where is the President of Africa’s most populous nation, a country of more than 200 million people - more than Ghana - whose leader has been absent from the global stage for three consecutive UNGAs?
Nigeria’s President, who ought to be representing the country and providing leadership for Africa at the international level, has not attended any of these three global gatherings. Where is he, particularly at a time when the country faces significant challenges, both domestically and internationally?
Although our Vice President, Kashim Shettima, was present, the question remains: Where is the President? Let us continue to pray for his return and for his leadership in addressing the many challenges confronting the nation.
A new Nigeria is POssible. -PO

@Victor_Webflow@Yohanansoltd Omo if you love your peace of mind, avoid this business.
Except you have enough energy to hold people accountable.
This is not to discourage you but the reality is, we are in a low-trust society.
“For those who are still doubting Mr Peter Obi, this is Nnewi High School in Anambra State. Look at the school buses, big Lister generator, free internet service he provided to the school, alongside other schools across the state. Imagine having this kind of vision over 14 years ago. Imagine what could happen if he assumes office as president.”
