These pyramids were made by Africans known as Nubians and Kushites. They were used to store food and for burying the dead. In the 19th century, these pyramids were largely looted and destroyed by Europeans. The most notorious was the Italian treasure hunter Giuseppe Ferlini, who violently plundered and blew the tops off over 40 pyramids.
