Twitterverse: are there any (reliable) reference databases for vertebrate 12S mtDNA sequences out there? Thinking along the lines of Silva, PR2 etc ...

@WestobyMark Currently, there are no incentives not to abuse staff, in fact abuse often has advantages for the abuser. As with all abuse it's often hard to prove without a doubt bcse it often happens without witnesses. And no, I'm not talking about being treated unfriendly.
1/4 Twitter, what do you do when you see people boasting about how supportive they are (ECRs come work with me! ..") but you know they are toxic and abusive? How do you warn others? How do you make sure that they don't ruin yet another career, destroy another ECR?
@WestobyMark Which leads to exactly the problem I'm talking about: existential fears. So limited-term contract employees don't speak up => nothing changes. And processes like thsi may "theoretically" be already in place but I don't think either of us has any illusions about the reality.
@WestobyMark How about creating incentives for supervisors not to abuse students/staff and foster a workplace culture where abuse is not acceptable? E.g. an ethics committee with the power to ban academics from supervising students/postdocs for x years?
@WestobyMark I agree somewhat but feel that this is outsourcing the problem solution to the students. Shouldn't the university be interested and protect staff and students?
4/4 It makes me sick and I feel guilty. I am wondering where is the difference to the priest/family member/coach where everyone knows something is wrong but no one says anything publicly? ... #academiaisbroken
3/4 The institutions know about it but don't seem to care (enough). HR knows, their supervisors know, colleagues know (but usually don't say anything, look away to protect themselves). What else to do? See another ECR develop PTSD/depression caused by this?
