This is a rare behind-the-scenes shot of the original Xenomorph from the 1979 film Alien. The image clearly reveals the eerie “human” skull visible beneath the creature’s translucent dome. A deliberate design choice by H.R. Giger. He included it to suggest that the alien mimics distinctive features of its host.
An 'Alien' Gargoyle; guards the 12th Century AD, Scottish Abbey...
Paisley Abbey, a Scottish parish church situated on the east bank of White Cart Water in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland. It was first built in 12th Century AD. The medieval site is steeped in history, it’s even said Sir William Wallace was educated here. But it’s the abbey’s more recent architectural details that are responsible for drawing sci-fi fans to the site, as an unusual looking gargoyle carved high up on the abbey’s roof is making waves on social media because it mirrors xenomorph creature from 1979 movie Alien.
In 1991, abbey underwent some necessary restoration work. The 12 of its 13 gargoyles were so badly ruined from water damage they had to be removed. The work was carried out by an Edinburgh-based stone masonry company, which replaced the carvings with newer models. Apparently, some of the stone masons had a bit of fun with their creations. One of gargoyles is certainly unique, which is fitting, as medieval tradition holds that no two gargoyles can look same. The creature bears a strong resemblance to H.R. Giger’s Xenomorph from Alien franchise. As films were popular throughout 1980s and early ‘90s, it’s likely one of workers drew a bit of inspiration from its otherworldly antagonist. But this alien being won’t go around stalking and terrorizing any astronauts. Instead, it remains mounted on abbey’s southwestern side, performing its honorable gargoyle duty of warding off evil.
Reverend Alan Birss told BBC News that during a refurbishment project at abbey in early 1990s, 12 medieval gargoyles, which had been on the abbey for hundreds of years had been replaced and he thinks that one of stonemasons must have been “having a bit of fun.” Only one of the original gargoyles remains outside the abbey today to demonstrate how they would have looked originally, before the alien took over. The building’s interior also features medieval grotesques.
Mr. Birss said a stonemason from an Edinburgh firm was contracted to create the new gargoyles when film was “fairly new” but he thinks mason wasn’t deliberately copying alien in the film and it was just a “concept of an alien.” Mr. Birss also said that an internet search showed that someone had pointed out similarity as far back as 1997.
Architecturally, gargoyles are stonemasons’ tools, carved with spouts, which are designed to take water away from sides of buildings, therefore preventing rainwater from eroding masonry and its connecting mortar. Medieval architects sometimes created rows of ‘grotesques’ with water troughs cut in backs of gargoyle and reason these fantastical creatures often look ‘stretched’ is because longer the gargoyle, further rainwater was directed from walls. However, primary application of gargoyle was to illustrate evil through form of tormented looking creature. Itself believed to frighten off evil spirits and protect those that it guards within church.
According to a Historic Environment Scotland document titled, Paisley Abbey, drain measures at least 90m long, up to 2m wide and up to 2.2m high and before archaeologists could access it they had to pump out water. Walls of drain hold stonemasons’ marks, and it was found to contain many items, some of which are now on display in abbey, including: a slate marked with musical notation, which is oldest example of polyphonic music found in Scotland. According to Kenneth Elliot’s 2000 book Musical Slates: The Paisley Abbey Fragments, drain also contained imported cloth seals, 15th Century chamber pots, tweezers and carved bone handles.
The abbey’s most historically significant feature is tomb in choir incorporating a female effigy widely believed to be Marjorie Bruce, mother of Robert II. Opposite Marjorie Bruce lie tombs of Robert III of Scotland and Simon fitz Alan and furthermore, Paisley Abbey is also burial place of all 6 High Stewards of Scotland and wives of Robert II and King Robert III.
