I today presided over stakeholder validation exercise on the draft Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA) Strategic Plan 2023-2027.

The Authority's strategic direction and commitment for the 2023-2027 period is anchored on four pillars.

The Cabinet Secretary Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, Hon. Mithika Linturi, hosted a Farmer's Field Day at Embu University in Embu County today.

This field day, organized by the Agriculture and Food Authority in collaboration with the Embu County Government, aimed to provide farmers with the skills and expertise needed to enhance their production and productivity.

During the event, the Authority distributed 1,500 cashew seedlings, 3,000 avocado seedlings, 1,500 macadamia seedlings, 2,000 muguka seedlings, and 400 bixa seedlings (a pilot sample) to farmers in the county for the upcoming planting season.

Present at the event were Embu County Governor, H.E. Cecily Mbarire, MGH; Hon. Cornelly Serem, Chairman­- Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA); AFA Board Directors, including Peterson Muthathai, HSC, Daniel Kitivo, OGW, and Dr. Rosebellah Langat; and AFA Head of Directorates, Christine Chesaro (Horticultural Crops Directorate), Ann Gikonyo (Nuts and Oil Crops Directorate), Dr. Benson Apuoyo (Coffee Directorate), and Felix Mutwiri (Miraa, Pyrethrum, and Other Industrial Crops Directorate), among other dignitaries.

This morning I paid a courtesy call to Trans Nzoia County Governor - H.E. George Natembeya, to discuss collaboration in promoting the production of edible oils through the provision of sunflower seeds to farmers ahead of the anticipated rains.

The five-year (2023-2028) project shall address increasing the production of sunflower, canola, coconut and Soya beans from the estimated 60,000 ha to 250,000ha in five years, and increasing productivity from 80,000MT to 240,000MT, providing raw material for processors,
