Been having this ongoing discussion today with @BrigadeReview about the Great Chain & West Point.
The British strategy during the Revolution was similar to the Unionβs Anaconda Plan during the Civil War. The Brits wanted to divide Revolutionary New England off from the rest of the country along the line of the Hudson River. They could then partition America again along the Chesapeake, pacify the South first, then the mid-Atlantic, then burn New England to the ground.
Washington understood this. He ordered Constitution Island manned in 1775; the first Chain went in ~1776. Fortress West Point became more or less operational in 1778.
A lot happened at the same time. Washington forced the British out of Boston in 1776, lost at NYC, but then beat them again on Christmas at Trenton.
To greatly oversimplify, the Brits owned NYC & Charleston but not much else by late 1778. Theyβre never going to split the colonies & therefore get a shot at actually winning with a fully operational Death Star at West Point. So they try to buy it by treachery from its then commander, Benedict Arnold.
Luck & early spy-craft foil that plot. Then Cowpens happens, & America wins back the South. Cornwallis relocates to Yorktown, again hoping to split the colonies, this time along the Chesapeake. But the French blockade him in, & Washington takes his works by force.
Jeff Monken said on This Week in #ArmyFootball that junior QB Cale Hellums will make his second straight/career start against North Texas Saturday at Michie Stadium
The spine of every victory lives in shadows, darkness & deliberate discipline we take on alone but with together in mind at the summit.
No savior is coming, no hand will pull you up. The weight on your back is yours, the climb is yours. The summit stays sacred.
