I keep seeing comments like: *“If pregnancy is dangerous, why did you give birth? Aren’t you a mother yourself?”*

Or *“Is it every woman that gets pregnant that develops problems? If not, why call pregnancy dangerous?”* — and many other similar remarks.

Instead of dismissing these as low-IQ questions, I choose to see them as an opportunity for education and as evidence of an obvious knowledge gap. So let me address this.

In Nigeria, for every 100,000 pregnant women, an estimated **950–1,050 women die** from pregnancy and childbirth–related causes.

Beyond deaths, for every 100,000 pregnant women, about **5,000–10,000 develop serious pregnancy- or childbirth-related illnesses (maternal morbidity)** — complications that can permanently affect their health, livelihood, and quality of life.

Now compare this to the global average: **about 100 women die per 100,000 births worldwide.**
In Nigeria, the average is **around 1,000 deaths per 100,000 births.**

Because of this alarming burden, huge efforts and funding have been directed toward improving maternal health.
For example, **USAID funded about $423 million** for maternal and reproductive health programs, while the **World Bank approved $570 million** to strengthen Nigeria’s primary healthcare system, including maternal and newborn services.

So when someone with any level of influence — even influence over just one person — boldly states that *pregnancy is not dangerous*, it is not a harmless opinion. Influence has a ripple effect. One person can influence twenty more.

Statements like this can subtly reshape public perception. They may discourage pregnant women from attending antenatal or postnatal clinics. They may cause women to ignore medical advice. Ultimately, this can **increase maternal morbidity and mortality — the very outcomes healthcare workers and governments are working tirelessly, day and night, to reduce.**

Speaking up against such narratives is therefore not just about defending the dignity of women who have suffered or died from pregnancy-related complications.
It is about **protecting lives.**
It is about **supporting evidence-based care.**
And it is about **not allowing careless talk to undermine the hard work of already exhausted healthcare workers.
